If a process sounds too fast or too easy, it is almost certainly a scam.

By law, applying for Italian citizenship directly in Italy requires you to be a genuine, permanent resident of that municipality (comune). This is a strict procedure that takes around 45 days just to prove you live there—you cannot simply visit for a couple of weeks.

We are seeing a devastating rise in "Three-Month Residency Scams" where agencies use fake rental contracts to bypass the rules. When Italian authorities audit these towns, the victims lose their Italian citizenship, have their passports retroactively cancelled, and lose all their original documents.

Your citizenship is a lifelong legacy. It is not worth risking on a shortcut.

💡 Did You Know? Not all translations are created equal!

For Italian citizenship, you cannot simply use a standard translation service or translate the documents yourself.

Italy requires Sworn Translations (traduzioni giurate).

⚖️ This means the translator must take an oath before an Italian court or notary, legally certifying that the translation is a true and accurate reflection of the original document.

💡 Tip of the Month: The "Giovanni to John" Pipeline.

🇮🇹 When our Italian ancestors emigrated to the UK, the US, or South America, their names were often changed. Sometimes it was intentional to assimilate (Giovanni becoming John, or Giuseppe becoming Joseph), and sometimes it was a simple clerical error by an immigration official who misheard a surname.

🇮🇹 Similarly, birth years often shifted by a year or two on marriage and death certificates.

🇮🇹 Will this ruin your application? Not necessarily, but it must be addressed. The Italian authorities need to be 100% certain that the "Giovanni Bedin" born in Italy in 1890 is the exact same person as the "John Bedin" who married in London in 1915. Depending on the severity of the discrepancy, we resolve this by either obtaining official "One and the Same" declarations, amending the UK/foreign records, or building a legal argument for the Italian courts proving the individual's identity.

From 2029, all applications for Italian citizenship by descent will be centralised in Rome. Applications will no longer be accepted at consulates, and the process will be managed exclusively by a department linked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Given the challenges of the administrative route, judicial applications remain the most effective option for those seeking citizenship.
