✨ My top tips for answering “why this firm” on TC applications:

1) make it personal. Please don’t say that a merger between a larger pharma company and a smaller large pharma company changed your life (unless you’re REALLY into pharma companies). Don’t pick a random case study and use that as your reasoning for choosing the firm. It’s better to say :
- I attended an event at your firm and enjoyed X Y Z
- I spoke to Jane Doe at your firm and felt like I could connect to people easily beyond just the legal world
- I am really passionate about X (let’s say Tech), and your firm has Tier 1 team working on Y ( Digital assets), and I feel like I could be an excellent addition because I studied Z (Data ethics)

2) DO YOUR RESEARCH. Do it. Beyond their website. Don’t just quote the website back at the recruiter. Look at other sites like Chambers, LegalCheek, TCLA etc. read what people say about the firm; see which solicitors the firm employs and which of them are particularly notorious etc. Has the firm been in the news recently? You can demonstrate your commercial awareness here too.

3) I’d say mix professional and personal reasons. Don’t just say “you have amazing pro Bono and fabulous secondments and you will also pay for my MBA”… cause you know, you are applying for a JOB there. Like, AT THE FIRM. Where you’re supposed to work as a FEE EARNER. So it’s good to be excited about those things obviously but don’t ONLY talk about how the firm is a means to an end but treat it as an end in itself. (How Kantian of me😏)
