Ayo Otuyalo is conferred with the Freedom of the City of London at the historic Guildhall, a fitting testament to a life and career built on character, leadership, relationships, and global relevance.

The Freedom of the City of London remains one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies in the world, dating back to 1237. Historically, it represented trust, honour, and the right to conduct trade and civic life within the City of London. Over time, it evolved into one of the City’s most respected honours, bestowed upon distinguished individuals whose contributions have shaped business, leadership, public life, philanthropy, arts, and international relations.

Among those honoured over the years are Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Muhammad Ali, Ian Wright, and Morgan Freeman, individuals whose influence transcended borders and generations.

Today, it is fitting that Ayo Otuyalo joins that distinguished company.

Ayo has preserved the timeless ethos and character of a true gentleman while remaining deeply relevant across the world and across generations.

At the airport the night before, Buki Odeyemi simply said:
“I’m on my way to Pastor Ayo’s conferment.”

That statement alone captures the many dimensions of the man.

To some, he is a respected business leader.
To others, a mentor.
To many, a spiritual guide.
A connector of people and ideas.
A trusted friend.
But above all, a truly internationally connected gentleman whose grace, humanity, and relationships continue to leave a lasting impact wherever he goes.

One of the most famous traditions attached to the Freedom of the City of London is the symbolic privilege of driving sheep across London Bridge, a nod to medieval times when Freemen could bring livestock into the City without paying tolls.

Congratulations once again to Ayo Otuyalo on this richly deserved honour.

I was recently sent a clip arguing that Dubai is now a far better property investment destination than London and New York.

Higher yields.
Lower taxes.
Faster growth.

And to be fair, Dubai has built an extraordinary global property market.

But this interview with Daniel Adose at Number 10 captures something many experienced investors understand:

London is a long-term game.

People do not only invest in London for yield.

They invest for:
• legal stability
• institutional transparency
• trusted banking systems
• liquidity
• currency confidence
• and generational wealth preservation

This week, a client told me they sold a Dubai property for almost half of what they originally paid and had to physically travel there before funds could be transferred.

That conversation reinforced something important:

In property investment, governance, transparency and predictability matter just as much as returns.

Markets can rise quickly.
Policies can change quickly.
Regional tensions can shift sentiment quickly.

Yet prime London property has survived wars, recessions, political upheaval and financial crises over centuries.

Dubai is exciting.
London is enduring.

Sophisticated investors usually understand there is room for both.

I have done several UK property roadshows over the years, but my last time taking the podium alongside Kenny Sofowora was back in 2007 at the Muson Centre in Lagos.

So this upcoming session on the 19th of May feels particularly meaningful.

Kenny and I have come a long way since then. She is an exceptionally experienced lawyer with deep expertise across both residential and commercial property. Over the years, we have both, in our different capacities, played a role in helping open up the UK property market to a generation of buyers who have gone on to build lasting portfolios and legacies.

I look forward to working with the Access Bank UK team, led by Julie Soyinka-Sonuga, who are putting this important event together in Lagos.

The session will be valuable for both existing homeowners and prospective buyers interested in the UK property market, offering practical insights into timing, structuring, and financing property investments.

Please register via the IG Story link, as places are limited.
