Families of deceased loved ones could get car finance compensation under FCA rule 🚙

Families are being encouraged to check the car finance history of deceased loved ones after guidance from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) confirmed that eligible agreements held by people who have since died can still fall within its motor finance compensation scheme.

The scheme covers certain motor finance agreements taken out between 6 April 2007 and 1 November 2024 where commission was payable by the lender to the broker and the relevant eligibility criteria are met.

A surprising number of people still don't have an up-to-date will ✍️

Recent industry reporting says two-thirds of UK adults surveyed did not have a current will. The latest Will Aid 2026 survey found that among people who had never made a will, 29% said they believed they had nothing worth leaving. Other common reasons included putting it off, not wanting to think about death, cost and believing the process is complicated.

Most of us don’t like thinking about what happens when we die. But making a will isn't really about death — it's about making sure the people and things that matter to you are looked after according to your wishes.

Almost a third of people without a will believe they have nothing worth leaving behind, new research reveals.

A national poll of almost 2,000 respondents commissioned by the charity Will Aid suggests 67% of adults either do not have a will or the one they have is out of date.

The research found 57% of people have never made a will, while a further 10% admit their existing will no longer reflects their current circumstances or wishes.

Of the 1,151 people surveyed who had not made a will, the most common reason (29%) was the belief that they did not have anything worth leaving.

Living together doesn’t give you the same legal protections as being married ⚭

Ricky Gervais has recently highlighted this issue after revealing that, following more than 40 years with his partner Jane Fallon, they are considering marriage partly because of the inheritance tax protections available to spouses and civil partners.

It’s an important reminder for cohabiting couples not to assume they automatically have the same rights as married couples, particularly when it comes to inheritance and what happens if one partner dies.

Planning ahead, including having an up-to-date Will and taking appropriate legal advice, can help ensure your wishes and your partner are properly protected.

Could Wills Be Going Digital? 💻

The law surrounding wills is currently under review, with the Law Commission considering whether the rules should be modernised to reflect today's technology and changing family life.

One proposal being explored is the introduction of electronic wills.

However, no changes have been made yet.

At present, electronic wills are not legally valid in England and Wales. To be valid, a will must still comply with the current legal requirements, including being properly signed and witnessed.

If you've been putting off making a will, or you're unsure whether your existing will is still suitable, now is a good time to review your arrangements.

At Pishon Gold Solicitors, we can help ensure your wishes are recorded in a legally valid will, giving you and your loved ones peace of mind.
