Expatriate Law

Expatriate Law Divorce & Family law We appreciate the need to protect you and your children during the uncertainties of divorce.

Our clients have told us it was a ‘breath of fresh air’ and a ‘weight off their shoulders’ talking to us. Our breadth of experience allows us to deliver realistic and clear advice. Our lawyers are all qualified solicitors or barristers, regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority of England or Bar Standards Board. Additionally our lawyers are members of or accredited by Resolution, the former

Solicitors Family Law Association in England. We are proud to have advised a wide range of clients from corporation owners to members of ruling families. We give a discrete, confidential and personalised service to all we assist, whether in complex litigation or a straightforward divorce. We realize that the breakdown of a marriage can be traumatic for a husband and wife, and any children involved. Living as an expatriate, these feelings can be compounded by unfamiliar surroundings, lack of ready and clear advice, and the inability to turn to a wider family network living ‘back home’. We promote a constructive, non-confrontational approach to the resolution of family law issues. In our experience, this minimises disruption to any children involved, and leads to long standing workable solutions. However, where decisive or immediate Court action is required, for example to recover an abducted child, or prevent the dissipation of matrimonial assets, our lawyers act promptly and efficiently to safeguard the interests of a client.

The first time 'gaslighting' has been referred to in a family court judgment. Gaslighting refers to manipulating someone by making them question their very grasp on reality by forcing them to doubt their memories and pushing a false narrative of events. This is a significant milestone in family law in the UK.

I was quoted in an article in the Financial Times yesterday that discusses a positive outcome of Brexit for family lawyers - the falling away of the EU Maintenance Regulations. These used to block maintenance claims for expats divorcing in England under the sole domicile rule. Post Brexit, these rules no longer apply, meaning that expats who establish jurisdiction for divorce in England whilst living abroad can make the full range of financial claims against their spouse. New rules post Brexit also give another advantage to expats divorcing in England whilst living in Europe. Previously, couples living in Europe could only divorce in England if both were domiciled in England. This has now changed, widening the scope for expats wishing to divorce using the English courts.

Our Story

We are a firm of international divorce and family lawyers, with our main office in London. We advise British expatriates living overseas, and international families or individuals with links to England. We advise on all family law cases, from straightforward divorce matters, or division of assets on divorce, to children matters including custody disputes, relocation with children and child abduction.
