As facial recognition technology becomes more widely used in policing, questions are being raised about how accurate and fair these systems are in real-world settings.

One key issue is how the technology performs when faces are partially covered, whether due to religious dress, cultural clothing, or other reasons. Reduced visibility can affect accuracy, increasing the risk of misidentification or false matches.

This raises important legal and ethical considerations:
⚖️ How reliable is the technology in diverse communities?
⚖️ What safeguards are in place to prevent misidentification?
⚖️ How do we balance effective policing with individual rights and freedoms?

Do you think facial recognition is ready to be used widely in policing?

A new report highlighted by Sky News has found that too many children are still being subjected to strip searches described as “intrusive and traumatic.”

While the number of searches has reduced in recent years, serious concerns remain:
• Some searches are still unnecessary or unsafe.
• In certain cases, force is used.

Strip searches should only ever be a last resort, used where there is an immediate risk of serious harm yet the data suggests this threshold is not always being met.

These findings highlight the importance of young people understanding their rights when interacting with the police particularly around stop and search powers.

New analysis suggests the Crown Court backlog may already be starting to fall raising important questions about what is really causing delays in the justice system.

While proposals have focused on limiting jury trials, data points to another issue: unused courtrooms and limited sitting days.

What do you think is causing delays?

Lack of resources
Jury Trials

📢 Non-Crime Hate Incidents: Lords Back Major Change

The House of Lords has voted to scrap the recording of non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs), a move described by some as a significant step for free speech.

NCHIs are incidents where behaviour is perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, but does not meet the threshold of a criminal offence.

Under the proposed changes:
⚖️ Police would no longer routinely record or retain these incidents
⚖️ Officers would instead focus on matters that meet the threshold for criminal investigation

Supporters argue this is about ensuring police focus on crime, not expression.
Others have raised concerns about the potential impact on monitoring hostility and preventing escalation.

We received a beautiful hand drawn thank you card this morning from a member of our team who has recently moved on.

One line inside meant a great deal to us: “You give clients and their loved ones the time and attention. You go the extra mile as a rule rather than an exception.”

Such thoughtful words. Our team is incredibly grateful, and the card now has pride of place in the office.

⚖️False Allegation case leads to jail sentence.
A mother of 5 has been jailed after falsely accusing a man of r**e, despite him helping her get home safely when she was distressed.

False allegations can have devastating consequences for those wrongly accused and their families.

Making a knowingly false report is a criminal offence and can result in prosecution.

It’s a question we’re often asked by clients who have been cleared of allegations; Should demonstrably false complaints routinely lead to prosecution?

The UK Government has announced wide-ranging proposals to reform policing in England and Wales. These plans include creating a new National Police Service (a “British FBI”) to handle serious and cross-regional crime, setting national emergency response targets, and reducing administrative burdens so officers can be more present in communities.

What do you think? Will these changes improve public safety and justice?
