Networking in the UK: speak friend and enter
The UK has its own unique cultural code and ways to run business. Superficially, it may seem that the business environment is cold, reserved and unwelcoming to newcomers. But that's not true. Once you understand how to navigate and connect, you'll find support from the community.
Compare to the US, the country built by immigrants, where you can start your life and business from scratch.
The UK is different. You won't immediately feel a demand for everything you bring with yourself to the country. Even if you have a visa based on your expertise (such as the Global Talent visa), your previous success and expertise won’t be immediately relevant in everyday interactions. If you rely solely on public channels for outreach, you may find yourself knocking on closed doors and feeling frustrated by the lack of responses.
The catch is like this: the UK business community is not a single unified entity, but rather a collection of intersecting semi-isolated “clubs”. These communities are formed around education, social class, specific industries. To connect with others in the UK, it's crucial to find someone who personally trusts you, can guide you, and introduce you to the specific communities you need. You could be just one person away from the opportunity you've been searching for.
So, here's the strategy:
1. Clearly define what you want.
2. Then, engage in personal conversations with as many people as possible about your goal. Eventually, one of them will guide you.
And once you're in, you won't get lost.
