Many couples live together for years without ever marrying. But when those relationships end, the law treats them very differently from married couples. There is no such thing as “common law marriage” in England and Wales. If your name isn’t on the deeds, or if you’ve made contributions to a property you don’t legally own, you may need to look at TOLATA — the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996.
