If politicians of varying colours and the muppets peddling hate on social media are making you feel depressed to be British at the moment - take heart from the fact that among us is the wonderful person who handed my wallet into the Tesco petrol station in Bootle last night. Not only were all my cards still present but so was every one of a (stupidly) large number of banknotes. There are lots of good people out there - even if it's easy to forget it sometimes.

As is often the case in January, many charities are actively appealing for legacy donations – many offering a “free” Will Writing service to encourage people to do so.

Whilst we would never wish to discourage people from supporting charities please take care when signing up to these services, many charities – including some of the big ones – have aligned themselves with organisations that provide a free basic will service in return for the opportunity to directly promote additional services at often highly inflated prices using high pressure sales techniques.

We have first-hand experience of one of these organisations and did not hesitate to decline their interest in partnering with them to provide services in our locality.

Our recommendation? Be prepared to pay for your Will, shop around locally among both solicitors and professional estate planners (SWW or IPW), seek references and ideally obtain personal recommendations.

Any Estate Planner worth their salt will offer a free initial consultation and then recommend the most appropriate course of action to suit your personal circumstances without any obligation.
