When people think about divorce, they often focus on the family law issues involved. But for some couples, separation can also have significant immigration consequences.

If someone is in the UK on a spouse visa, the breakdown of a relationship can affect their immigration status and the steps they may need to take next.

This week, Sarah Goodwin, Senior Immigration Solicitor at Emerald Law, discusses how divorce can affect a UK spouse visa, including why timing matters and why it is important to get advice early.

You can read the full article here: https://emeraldlaw.co.uk/news/does-divorce-affect-a-spouse-visa-in-the-uk

At Emerald Law, we specialise in both immigration law and family law. If you are divorcing and your spouse is in the UK on a spouse visa, or if your own immigration status is linked to your relationship, it is important to get advice early. Our family and immigration teams can help you understand the position, the steps that may need to be taken, and the options available moving forward.

Family court proceedings across England & Wales are set to change with the roll-out of the new Child Focused Court model.

Following a successful pilot across 10 courts, the Ministry of Justice have made the decision to rollout this out across all 43 courts in England & Wales. This is an important development for parents and carers involved in child arrangements disputes, with a stronger focus on understanding the child’s experience, identifying risk earlier, and helping the court make decisions more effectively.

Here's what it means for families in England & Wales:

1. The court process will become more child-focused from the outset. The aim is to place greater emphasis on the child’s welfare, lived experience and best interests from the very beginning.

2. More information may be needed earlier in the case. Parents may be asked to provide fuller detail at an earlier stage, particularly where there are concerns around safeguarding, risk or domestic abuse.

3. The change could lead to quicker, more effective outcomes. Early evidence from pilot areas suggests cases may be resolved faster and with fewer families needing to return to court later on.

For many families, that could be a positive step forward, but it also means getting clear advice early will be more important than ever.

Angie Brown, Head of Family & Non-Court Resolution at Emerald Law, discusses what’s changing, what it means for clients, and the potential pros and cons for families looking to resolve child arrangement disputes in the future.

Deciding to end a marriage is a huge and intimidating decision, and one of the hardest ones you can ever make. For many people, the hardest part is simply understanding your options and the legal differences between a formal divorce and a separation.

While the two can seem similar, they can have very different legal and practical implications. In our latest article, Charlotte Aribike explains the key differences between divorce, informal separation and judicial separation, as well as how long divorce can take and what factors you may want to consider before deciding what is right for you.

If you are trying to understand your options, or want to support someone who is, this is a helpful place to start.

We recently secured £5,250 in damages and full repairs for a housing association tenant living in serious disrepair with ongoing health issues. Here's how we did it.

Structural issues with windows, doors and plaster as well as pest infestations and mould and damp meant that this tenant's home, where they had lived since 1999, had become unsafe and uninhabitable.

Luckily, this client had Ahmed Bouziane & Karl Nulty from out Housing Disrepair team on their side. We argued this client's disrepair was not only a breach of the landlord's contractual obligations, but also their legal duties under section 11 and section 9A of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985.

The result?
✅ £5,250 in damages secured
✅ Repairs finally completed after years of waiting
✅ Achieved without going to trial
✅ Won on a No Win, No Fee basis
