Mediation gets written off by people who assume it's just for amicable splits - that if things are tense, it's straight to court. It's often the opposite.

Mediation is designed to help people who don't fully agree reach workable arrangements with a trained neutral in the room, without the cost and combativeness of a courtroom. It won't suit every situation - where there's been abuse or a serious imbalance of power, but for most separating couples it's quicker, cheaper, and easier on any children involved.

You are also required to attempt medication before using the court process, but those who see it as a chance to reach a swifter, and potentially more amicable settlement, can often avoid a lot of the stresses and expenses of having a judge decide.

Which of these surprised you? Drop it in the comments.

Rob decided he wanted to do some networking again and joined , which he'll profess involves working hard, but actually involves playing a round of golf. We will leave you guys to decide if you believe him or not 😉

Fortunately, he keeps winning things, so we guess we'll let him go back a few more times. Closest to the pin in June, and then in July, a put-off challenge 🏆

Naming an executor feels like a formality - you pick someone you trust and move on. But the choice matters more than people realise.

An executor needs to be organised, willing, likely to outlive you, and able to stay level-headed if family tensions surface.

Appointing two can share the load, but only if they can work together. Appointing a professional removes the burden entirely, which some families prefer.

The wrong choice - an unwilling relative, someone abroad, two people who won't agree, can slow everything down at the worst possible time. Definitely worth a few minutes' proper thought.

One of the defined grounds a landlord can rely on under the new rules is the need to live in the property themselves or for a close family member. It sounds simple, but it comes with conditions, particularly around who counts as family, how much notice is required, and the evidence you may need to show the intention is genuine.

Get it wrong, and a possession claim can fail on the paperwork alone.

If this is your situation, it's worth getting the process right the first time. Call us on 0151 637 2034.

When an employee raises a grievance, it's tempting to treat it as noise - especially if it feels unreasonable. But a grievance handled badly, or ignored, has a way of resurfacing, and in a much more damaging way

A documented, fairly handled grievance protects the business; a dismissed one becomes the paper trail an employee's solicitor builds a case around.

The law expects employers to follow a fair process, and tribunals look closely at whether one was followed. It doesn't mean agreeing with every complaint; it means being seen as taking it seriously.

Facing one you're unsure about? Get advice before you respond, not after. Call us on 0151 637 2034.

For many business tenants, the answer is no.

The law gives many an automatic right to renew when the term ends, so the business they've built in that spot is protected. But here's the catch: that right can be signed away. Leases are often "contracted out" of this protection, and tenants sign without fully clocking what they've given up.

If staying put matters to your business, this is worth checking before you sign, not when the end date is looming.

Plenty of businesses run for years on a handshake and good intentions, until the day good intentions aren't enough.

Chris sets out the core documents that quietly protect a company and give it the best chance of success: shareholder agreements, clear terms and conditions, employment contracts that match reality, and the paperwork that decides what happens when someone leaves or something goes wrong.

None of it is glamorous. All of it is far cheaper to sort now than to argue about later, after something has gone wrong.

Chris's blog breaks down what to prioritise and why: https://johnsonandboon.co.uk/2026/04/17/part-4-contracts-delivery-and-risk-getting-the-external-framework-right/

Divorce is one of those things nobody expects to be thanking anyone for, and yet, this lovely note landed with us recently, from someone we helped through theirs, and it is genuinely appreciated. That's the part of this job that doesn't show up on a bill, but probably matters the most.

If you'd like to see what others have said, our Google page is worth a look. And if you're in the thick of it yourself, we're only ever a phone call away - 0151 637 2034

Most people put off that first appointment because they don't know what they're walking into, and imagine the worst.

In this video, Joanne puts your mind at rest by walking us through what an initial divorce consultation actually involves: a confidential conversation about your situation, a plain explanation of your options, a realistic sense of timescales and costs, and no obligation to do anything next.

You won't be pushed into a process you're not ready for. You won't be buried in jargon. You'll leave knowing more than you did, which is often the thing people most need at the start.

If you've been sitting with the question for a while, this is the calm first step. Call us on 0151 637 2034.

The single thing that slows a separation down, and drives the cost up, is missing financial information. Bank statements, pension details, mortgage paperwork, business accounts, savings, debts: both sides have to lay it all out honestly before anything can be agreed.

Couples who gather this early, calmly, before positions harden, tend to reach a settlement faster and with far less friction. Those who leave it, or hold things back, turn a few months into a year.

It isn't the romantic part of ending a relationship, but it's the practical one that protects you. If you would like some guidance or help simply call us on 0151 637 2034 or visit johnsonandboon.co.uk
