If you have never bought a house before, the whole process can seem quite confusing and a little intimidating. You start to hear a lot of new words and terms and it’s easy to quickly feel out of your depth!

Conveyancing refers to the legal process of transferring the ownership of property from one person to another. It is an essential part of buying or selling property, ensuring that the transaction is legally binding and that the rights and interests of both parties are protected.

If you are thinking of moving house, or buying your first home, get in touch to see how we can help on 0151 480 5777, selecting option 2 for property.

You can also use our handy conveyancing calculator to give you an estimate of the costs involved: https://jrlevins.co.uk/services/how-much-is-conveyancing/

Can my employer change my contract without my consent?

A change to your hours, pay, duties or workplace might sound like something you simply have to accept. But just as you couldn’t award yourself a pay rise, your employer can’t usually rewrite your contract on their own.

So what can they change? And what happens if you say no?

We explain where employees stand here: https://jrlevins.co.uk/can-my-employer-change-my-contract-without-my-consent/

Wedding season may be ending, but for many couples a new chapter is just beginning. 💍

If you have recently got married, now can be a good time to review your Will.

Your Will isn’t a document to make once and forget. Life changes. It should keep up.

Marriage is one of those moments when it is worth checking that your wishes still reflect your life now and the future you are building together.

If reviewing your Will is still sitting somewhere on the post-wedding to-do list, our Wills & Probate team can help you get it sorted.

Get in touch with when you are ready to review your Will, by calling 0151 480 5777 and select option 4 for Karla and the Wills team.

Heading to a festival this summer? 🎪

Between planning who you want to see and remembering everything you need for the campsite, the legal consequences of being found with drugs probably aren’t high on the packing list.

It is important to remember festival sites are not exempt from the usual law.

Most people know that possessing illegal drugs is an offence. But if someone is found with a small amount for personal use, they want to know what is likely to happen next.

Our criminal defence team explains what you need to know in our guide:

Can I Be Prosecuted for Carrying a Small Amount of Drugs for Personal Use?

Worried that claiming will make things difficult for you at work?

Under the Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, employers are legally obliged to insure against liability for injury or illness suffered by their employees as a result of their work. There is no good reason for your employer to bear a grudge against you for bringing a claim.

If you have been injured at work, our Personal Injury Team are here to listen and deal with the claim on your behalf. And if your employer treats you unfairly, our Employment Team can help.

It is a common worry, especially if you believe you have done nothing wrong.

You may think asking for legal advice will make you look suspicious.

A police interview under caution is a formal process, as what you say may be considered later as part of the investigation. Even if you know you have done nothing wrong, it can be easy to misunderstand a question, forget a detail or explain something differently from how you intended.

Having a solicitor there simply means you have someone who understands the process, can explain what the allegation is about and can advise you before you answer questions.

Legal advice at the police station is normally free and independent, whether you have been arrested or asked to attend a voluntary interview.

So, asking for a solicitor is not an admission of guilt. It is your right.

Who keeps the pets after a divorce? 🐾

This is a common question for couples going through a separation. In the eyes of the law, pets are treated as property, not family members, so there's no such thing as "custody" for a dog or cat.

But recent cases are starting to look beyond who paid for the pet, and at who actually cares for it day to day.
