It's so we are reflecting on an issue important to our team 🐶

Currently, pets in divorce proceedings are considered chattels – no more than the pots or pans in the cupboard.

Unlike the welfare of a child, there is no statutory framework requiring a court to consider who primarily cared for the animal, whether a child is closely bonded to it, or whether there has been domestic abuse or animal cruelty.

As a member in the Working Group on Pets on Divorce and Separation, Diane Matthews, Senior Associate at MSB has been campaigning to get the law around pets and separating couples changed.
