Today marks nine years since the Manchester Arena attack, a tragedy that claimed 22 innocent lives and left a lasting impact on so many others.

We remember those who were killed, the survivors who continue to live with the effects of that night, and the families whose lives were changed forever. Their experiences must never be forgotten.

Across Manchester today, the city will come together in remembrance, falling silent at key moments to mark the anniversary. Two minute-long silences will be observed at Victoria Station, including at 10:31pm – the exact time the attack took place.

The Glade of Light memorial will remain a focal point for reflection, where the names of those lost are set in stone, and where flowers will be laid on behalf of the city. These acts of remembrance reflect a shared commitment that the lives lost will never be forgotten, and that the solidarity shown in the aftermath continues to define Manchester.

At Broudie Jackson Canter, it has been a privilege to stand alongside five bereaved families throughout the Manchester Arena Inquiry. Supporting them in seeking answers, clarity, and accountability has been a responsibility we have taken seriously at every stage.

Nine years on, we continue to reflect, to remember, and to support those who will be forever affected.

Hospital staff inappropriately accessed the medical records of the victims of the 2024 Southport dance class attack, a new investigation from the Health Service Journal has revealed.

An audit found 48 members of staff had no legitimate reason to view records of those treated at University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, but patients were only informed this week after media inquiries.

Leanne Lucas, who survived the Southport attack, has been told that she is the lone adult female referred to in the HSJ story and is waiving her anonymity. She said: “I am absolutely devastated and horrified that my privacy has been invaded when I was at my most vulnerable. Nothing will take away my gratitude to the staff who saved my life, but 48 people not involved in my care abused their position of trust to access the files of victims who have suffered unspeakable trauma.

"The decision to keep this from me for almost 2 years is a new low. I am speaking out as I want this scandal and the attempted cover up by senior management exposed for what it is."

Nicola Brook, Legal Director at Broudie Jackson Canter, who represents three survivors including Leanne at the Southport Inquiry, said: “This is a truly unbelievable breach of privacy for victims of one of the most horrific attacks this country has ever seen. This is more than a few bad apples when it was 48 different members of staff who for no legitimate reason, chose to access vulnerable victims’ records.

"That speaks to a culture and one that will only change if there are real consequences for those responsible. For the Trust to then try to hide that it happened is appalling. The Trust has many questions to answer and we will be ensuring our clients get those answers as soon as possible.”

The inquest into the death of Megan Gardiner has brought renewed attention to the vital discussions about the risks of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Megan was 25 years old and 17 weeks pregnant when she tragically died in June 2022. The inquest found that until April 2022 there was no documented confirmation that Megan’s high risk of SUDEP was discussed with her.

Elaine Macdonald, Deputy Head of Civil Liberties at Broudie Jackson Canter, who represents the family, said: "My clients are understandably devastated and angry about some of the evidence they heard at Megan’s inquest, in particular about how high Megan’s risk was and the support measures that could have been put in place.

"Answers are needed around Megan’s care and the lack of advice given to the family on sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). There needs to be greater awareness and understanding about the risks for women with epilepsy like Megan.”

We’re proud to share that Andrew Leakey and the Manchester Arena Civil Litigation Team have been shortlisted for Personal Injury / Clinical Negligence Team of the Year at the Manchester Legal Awards 2026.

This nomination recognises an exceptional claimant team effort following the Manchester Arena attack, bringing together Hudgell Solicitors, Slater and Gordon, Broudie Jackson Canter of the Jackson Lees Group, Byrom Street Chambers and Temple Garden Chambers.

Over four years, seven legal professionals across three firms and two sets of chambers worked as one team to pursue civil claims on behalf of 359 bereaved families and survivors, in a case where success was never guaranteed. At every stage, the focus remained firmly on the clients, prioritising clear communication, consistency, dignity and care for people navigating unimaginable trauma.

The work extended far beyond litigation. Pro bono rehabilitation support, financial and benefits guidance, and additional legal representation during the Public Inquiry and related proceedings were all driven by a shared commitment to accountability, fairness and long‑term client support. Tens of millions of pounds were ultimately recovered to help provide financial security and stability for those most affected.

This shortlisting is a genuine recognition of collaboration at its best, and of a legal team that put purpose before profit.

Congratulations to everyone involved on this well‑deserved recognition.

Last night at Liverpool Town Hall, we hosted our second Journey to Justice event, The Long and Winding Road, in collaboration with JUSTICE North.

The event brought together campaigners, legal professionals and members of the local community to examine a question that sits at the heart of our work: what does access to justice actually mean when people have been harmed, ignored or forced to fight for answers?

Discussions throughout the evening reinforced a reality we see every day in practice. Justice is rarely quick or straightforward. It often involves years of persistence, repeated setbacks and a system that can feel weighted against those trying to be heard.

We were pleased to open the evening with remarks from Steve R., Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, followed by Fiona Rutherford, CEO of JUSTICE, and elkan abrahamson, Head of Major Inquiries at Broudie Jackson Canter. Each spoke clearly about the importance of the rule of law working in practice, responding to lived experience and holding public bodies to account when things go wrong.

The event also marked the official launch of the JUSTICE North report, which examines the impact of centralised decision‑making on access to justice and makes the case for stronger, regionally informed legal systems across the north of England.

We heard powerful contributions from Suzanne Massey of DES Justice UK and Leanne Lucas of Lets Be Blunt CIC, who spoke about the long‑term impact of institutional failure and the importance of prevention‑led action rooted in lived experience.

A fireside discussion with Baroness Hale and Baroness Chakrabarti closed the evening, focusing on civil liberties, accountability and the responsibility that comes with legal power.

Our latest blog covers the evening in full, read more here: https://ow.ly/LtWS50YTbk0

As the evening draws to a close, we’re hearing final reflections from Joanna Kingston‑Davies, Co‑Founder of The MAPD Group.

Joanna's remarks bring together the themes that have shaped tonight’s conversations, the realities behind long journeys to justice, the responsibility attached to the rule of law, and the importance of standing alongside those seeking accountability and reform.

Tonight has been a reminder that progress is rarely straightforward, and that meaningful change is driven by people willing to challenge systems, listen to lived experience and persist over time.

Thank you to our speakers, partners, guests and campaigners for contributing to such a powerful and reflective evening at the Liverpool Town Hall.

We’ll be sharing further reflections and follow‑up communications tomorrow, keep an eye on Broudie Jackson Canter's social channels for more.
