Legal professionals have been calling for a reform to cohabitation laws to provide clearer rights and protections for cohabiting couples.

Many people are unaware that cohabiting couples do not have the same financial protections as married couples or civil partners, no matter how long they have lived together.

A “common law marriage” has no legal standing in England and Wales, so when a relationship comes to an end, issues around property ownership, financial support and arrangements for children can become complex, particularly where assets or contributions are not clearly documented.

If you are in a long term relationship, it would be wise to consider a cohabitation agreement to provide greater peace of mind for the future.
