Her experience spans a broad range of criminal matters, including serious sexual offences, drug conspiracies, and violent crime.

“I started as a Legal Assistant at HCB Solicitors over 8 years ago and feel fortunate to have developed my career with the firm. What a night! 🥂

Our recent HCB Solicitors Annual Reunion at Chaophraya Birmingham was one to remember!

From catching up with familiar faces to meeting new ones, the evening was all about great company, good conversation and plenty of laughs – all with an incredible Birmingham skyline as the backdrop.

Set over two floors, with a private balcony and a fantastic atmosphere, it was the perfect setting for our annual get-together.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a memorable evening. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

Failing to provide a breath, blood, or urine specimen when requested by the police is a serious offence. But where a genuine physical or mental health condition prevents someone from complying, there may be a defence.

Our latest article looks at what can constitute a reasonable excuse, why medical evidence matters, and the steps you should take if you find yourself in this situation.

☕💚 Join us for our Macmillan Coffee Days! 💚☕

This September, we are opening the doors of a couple of our offices and inviting the local communities to join us for a ‘cuppa’, a chat and, most importantly, to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

We’ll be hosting two coffee days this month:

📍 Warrington Office
📅 Thursday 17th September
⏰ From 2:00pm

📍 Westhoughton Office
📅 Thursday 24th September
⏰ From 10:30am

Both events are open to all, so whether you’re a client, a local resident, a friend of HCB Solicitors, or simply passing by, we’d love for you to pop in, meet our teams, and enjoy a coffee with us.

Every ‘brew’ and donation can help Macmillan continue to provide vital support to people living with cancer and their families. 💚

We hope to see lots of familiar faces - and plenty of new ones too!

We were proud to support Goalball UK over the bank holiday weekend by sponsoring their ‘Goalballathon’ - an event that saw 24hrs of non-stop Goalball played over 29th and 30th August at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Goalball is the only sport in the UK designed specifically for people who are blind or partially sighted. Every week, it helps people build confidence, independence, friendships, and a sense of belonging. It creates opportunities not just to take part in sport, but to thrive. The fundraising event was a celebration of endurance, community, and inclusion - all things that closely align with what we do at HCB Solicitors.

The sport is close to home for one of our solicitors, Jules Mackenzie, with her son, Max, having played Goalball since 2019 and now also part of the Goalball UK Youth Forum - the brains behind the fundraiser.

Speaking after the event, Jules commented, “For my family, Goalball has brought enrichment, inclusion, and a real sense of belonging in what is often a lonely and challenging sight loss journey. HCB Solicitors truly demonstrate what meaningful social responsibility looks like - I am incredibly proud to be part of HCB Solicitors, and delighted with this sponsorship that has helped encourage such an empowering sport”

“As for the event itself, I was bowled over by the resilience and determination of the players, referees, and judges. It was a privilege to witness and see it all in action. There were many memorable moments across the 2 days, and all were still smiling at the end before heading off on their long journeys home. Grit and determination on display at its very best!”

A huge congratulations from all of us at HCB Solicitors to everyone involved with the event.

Is your pension part of your wider estate planning?

With changes to the Inheritance Tax treatment of unused pension funds proposed from April 2027, now could be a good time to look again at how your pension, Will, and other assets work together.

The changes could have implications not only for beneficiaries, but also for the administration of an estate and the amount of Inheritance Tax that may ultimately be payable.

In our latest article, Senior Associate Solicitor, Amandeep Gangar, looks at what’s changing, who could be affected, and why reviewing your arrangements ahead of the new rules may be worthwhile.

Could upcoming changes to Inheritance Tax affect what happens to your pension?

From April 2027, proposed changes could bring most unused pension funds within the scope of Inheritance Tax; potentially affecting how much loved ones inherit and making pension planning an increasingly important part of wider estate planning.

In our latest article, Amandeep Gangar, Senior Associate Solicitor in our Private Client team, explains what the proposed changes could mean for pension inheritance, beneficiaries, and wills, as well as the steps you may wish to consider now.
