NHS waiting lists could top eight million by next summer, even if doctor strikes cease, according to modelling work by the Health Foundation charity.

It says industrial action has only contributed a small amount, lengthening the list by about 210,000 or 3% of the 7.75 million total by August.

Chronic shortages of NHS staff and funding are the main driver, it says.

NHS England says more than one million appointments and procedures have had to be rescheduled because of NHS strikes.

Too many people are still dying from sepsis due to "the same mistakes" highlighted more than 10 years ago, the UK's health ombudsman has warned.

Rob Behrens, who handles complaints about the NHS, said sepsis diagnosis and treatment was taking too long.

The UK Sepsis Trust estimates about 48,000 people die each year from sepsis-related illnesses, "thousands" of which are preventable.

NHS England said it was working to improve sepsis management.

More than 115,000 people with dementia are going undiagnosed because of where they live, analysis of official figures shows.

The number of adults living with dementia worldwide is on course to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050. In England, the NHS calculates that more than 700,000 people over 65 have dementia.

But analysis of NHS primary care dementia figures released last week reveals startling regional variation in diagnosis rates, with a 45 percentage point difference between the top and bottom performers. In all only 459,000 people in England actually have a recorded diagnosis, leaving more than 255,000 patients living with dementia without one.

A coroner has found neglect contributed to a baby's death at the hospital where he was born.

Jasper Brooks died at the Darent Valley Hospital in Kent on 15 April 2021.

The coroner found gross failures by midwives and consultants at the hospital and says Jasper's death was "wholly avoidable".

BBC presenter Naga Munchetty has told a committee of MPs that doctors told her to suck it up after she experienced extreme menstrual health problems.

Ms Munchetty and TV personality Vicky Pattison said GPs had repeatedly called their gynaecological symptoms "normal". Both turned to private healthcare to have their conditions treated.

A GP practice where some abnormal blood results were not reviewed quickly enough has been put in special measures by the health watchdog.

Emergency equipment at Richmond Medical Centre in North Hykeham, near Lincoln, also had no instructions in English, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said.

Pamela Redmond lived with bloating, nausea and constipation for years.

After many visits to the GP, hospitals and various tests, in 2020 she was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer, aged 56.

Pamela believes that if she had been screened at 50, her tumour would have been picked up early, instead of being left to grow for six years.

The County Down woman is telling her story as part of Bowel Cancer UK's campaign calling for earlier screening in Northern Ireland.

On Monday, patients and doctors will join Bowel Cancer UK at Stormont to call for decisions to be made on the budget so that a cancer strategy can be implemented.

The waiting list for planned NHS treatment in England has gone up again to another record high - at 7.75 million.

The figure at the end of August was up more than 100,000 on the month before.

Nearly 9,000 people in England are estimated to have been waiting more than 18 months to start their treatment, the data suggests.

All cancer waiting time targets were also missed, and ambulance and A&E waits increased too.

The number of people waiting more than a year for treatment was also higher than the previous month, at just under 397,000.

Patients who are female, black, Asian or less well-off are significantly less likely to be offered heart valve surgery on the NHS in England, according to a report that experts say is “deeply concerning”.

People develop aortic stenosis when their aortic valve narrows as a result of calcium buildup, impeding normal blood flow. This causes shortness of breath, light headedness and chest pain.

Aortic valve replacement (AVR) surgery not only relieves these symptoms but increases life expectancy and improves quality of life. As many as one in four of those with severe or very severe aortic stenosis will die within five years without AVR.

However, a large analysis examining AVR on the health service in England – the first of its kind – reveals striking inequalities in its provision.

About 17,500 women in Northern Ireland are to have their smear tests re-checked as part of a major review of cervical screening dating back to 2008.

Some of these women will be recalled to have new smear tests carried out, BBC News NI can reveal.

The Southern Trust said that the women affected should receive letters by post from Tuesday.

It follows a highly critical report by the Royal College of Pathologists (PCPath).

It found:

- Several cytology staff were "significantly underperforming"
- Mechanisms to check their work were flawed
- Action taken by management was inadequate over many years
- While a majority of negative results issued by the laboratory were correct, a "significant number" of these would likely have been identified as "potentially abnormal" by other laboratories

A mother said concerns about her baby's movements in late pregnancy were ignored by staff before she suffered a stillbirth, papers have revealed.

The 25-year-old had reported reduced foetal movements but had been sent home from Basildon Hospital.
