We are pleased to announce that Madelief Matheson and Ross Simmons have qualified as Solicitors within our Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department.

Maddy and Ross will work closely with our Partner, David Barnes, and Associate, Laura Miller. Their qualification marks a significant milestone for the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department and reflects the firm’s overall commitment to supporting new talent and providing exceptional legal services.

The Renters’ Rights Act 2025 represents a significant reform of the private rental market, affording further protections to tenants and aiming to create a more transparent and accessible market. Although a number of provisions included in the Act have not yet come into force, from 1st May 2026 most fixed term tenancies will be abolished, as will the ‘no-fault’ eviction process under section 21 of the Housing Act 1988.

The Residential Property team is in a fortunate position in 2026, going from strength to strength.

Most recently, Charles Robinson, an experienced and local property solicitor, has joined the team, reinforcing the quality of service we offer at our office in Kirkby Lonsdale. On joining, Charles mentioned “I am thrilled to be joining the Kirkby Lonsdale team of Oglethorpe Sturton & Gillibrand, a firm with a reputation in the town and beyond, for delivering high quality legal services in a friendly and efficient manner.”

As 18 of November is quickly approaching so is the next phase of the Companies House new identification verification requirements for directors and persons with significant control. It is the hope that the identification requirements introduced under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 will boost businesses and support growth by giving more assurances as to who is setting up, running and controlling companies in the UK, generating greater protection against fraud.

We recommend completing identity verification for all directors and PSCs in advance to ensure your company is ready to file its next Confirmation Statement and PSCs are verified in advance of their birth month to avoid missed deadlines.

In an exciting development for the Agricultural Law Association (“ALA”) and the Firm, Sam Rae has been appointed as the ALA Regional Chair for the North West. The ALA connects professionals across the country who specialise in supporting rural businesses to promote knowledge, understanding, and development of the law.

Sam’s appointment marks a significant step for the Firm as we continue to expand our reach and influence within rural business communities. John Myers, who heads up the Agricultural Department, said: “Sam has the whole Firm’s support as he steps into his new role as Regional Chair.
