Jen and Dereck's son Oliver had a significant brain injury in 2019 while competing in a flat track racing (motorbikes) in USA. He received his initial treatment in the States before being transferred to North General in Sheffield. He was transferred to a rehabilitation unit in Doncaster in May 2020, however fearful of covid and several others issues they decided to bring Oliver home. At this time he was hoisted for all transfers, had a PEG, was incontinent and had no verbal communication. He had limited movement in his right side and considerable tone in both upper and lower limbs.
Occupational Therapist Julie Parker stated 'I have had the honor and privilege to work with Oliver, Jen, Dereck and Lucy. I have also been fortunate enough to be able to observe the progress Oliver has made over the 4.5 years that I have been involved. This journey has definitely shown that some rehabilitation requires long term input to make that difference and when we get it right with have a our own little celebration, fist pump with flare.'
Oliver's family said 'Our son, Oliver, was living his dream travelling the USA racing motorcycles professionally, when in 2019 our lives changed dramatically following a terrible racing accident. We were constantly knocked down by medical teams, being given little hope for Oliver’s future, but we always believed that we could bring our boy back. This has been the most difficult journey of our lives but we’re giving it everything possible to help him regain his independence'
They won the Neurological and Complex Care Award which Julie Parker accepted on the families behalf.
The award recognises accomplishments across the health and social care workforce including services for individuals living with neurological conditions and complex care needs and those on the neuro – rehabilitation pathway.
Oliver and his family are receiving support and rehabilitation through Pave The Way CIC.
