Employers: that training agreement you’ve been relying on might not be worth what you think it is… 👀

In Geeks Ltd v Watts, an employee faced a training debt of more than £8,000 if he left.

The Court of Appeal found the arrangement amounted to an unenforceable restraint of trade.

Does this mean you can’t recover genuine training costs? No.

Does it mean your agreement needs to be properly drafted, proportionate and based on costs that can actually be justified? Absolutely.

If you use training repayment agreements, now might be a good time to dig them out. 👀

And as Dave Petersen quite rightly points out… this wasn’t an HR matter.

It was a complex business dispute involving litigation, negotiations, plenty of moving parts and ultimately a very clear commercial objective: achieving the share purchase he wanted.

Sometimes the best outcome isn’t simply about “winning”.

It’s about stepping back from the emotion, understanding the options, protecting your position and working strategically towards the outcome that actually matters.

And we got there. 🙌🏼

Dolly Parton built far more than a music career. She built a brand, businesses and a legacy without ever trying to become more palatable to everybody else.

There’s a business lesson in that.

Know who you are. Know what you stand for. And build from there.

Can you be sacked for slagging off your boss… when you didn’t realise they could hear you? 👀

A recent Employment Tribunal case says it’s not quite that simple.

Disciplinary action? Potentially.

Automatically gross misconduct and dismissal? No.

Because apparently thinking your boss is rubbish isn’t necessarily a sackable offence… just maybe check who’s within earshot before you say it. 😂
