Why is it important to have a Will?

Having a Will makes it much easier for those sorting things out when you die. Without a Will the process can be much more time consuming and stressful for those you leave behind.

If there is no Will everything is shared out in a standard way defined by the law which may differ from your wishes.

Writing a Will is especially important if you have children or others who depend on you financially.

TWO VERY GOOD REASONS TO WRITE A WILL

1. You decide where your assets go. When there is no Will, the Government decides who gets what.

2. A Guardian for children under 18 can be appointed in a Will, otherwise in the event that parents die without expressing their wishes Social Services would decide.

NOT A PLEASANT THOUGHT BUT UNFORTUNATELY AROUND 350 PEOPLE IN THE UK DIE SUDDENLY EACH WEEK THROUGH ACCIDENTS.

Most people just can't face the prospect of contemplating their own mortality and approximately 70% of individuals who should have a will haven't got one. Many feel making a will is something that only elderly people do and a common objection heard by the will writing profession to writing a will is;

"It isn't a priority, it's morbid and I don't like thinking about it".

The reason for having a will is to make things easier for your nearest and dearest if you do suddenly die - if you haven't yet made your will don't put it off any longer !

DIVORCED OR RECENTLY MARRIED ? - Ensure you make or revisit your Will !

Marriage - When you marry or re-marry any previous Will you have made is automatically revoked !

Divorce - When a divorce takes place it DOESN'T automatically revoke a Will !

Make sure any valid Will you have reflects your current wishes in the event of your death!

WHEN WRITING THEIR OWN WILLS INDIVIDUALS HAVE LEFT BEQUESTS IN THE PAST TO:

"The Royal Society for the Prevention of Birds"

"Doctor Bananas"

"The Royal Society for Cruelty to Animals"

Amusing but sad as these generous bequests couldn't be made through these mistakes being made! Make sure your wills are accurate and that your Executors can carry out your wishes with no problems!

SHOULD YOUR HOUSE BE USED TO FUND CARE COSTS ?

Whilst a couple are both still healthy and living in their own home they can take steps to mitigate the potential use of monies from the sale of their house to pay for care costs in the future. This is done through a Protective Property Trust being included in Mirror Wills. Why should your children's inheritance be used for long term care costs?
