Use the Bank Holiday to Reset Your Hiring Plan

Long weekend coming up. 🌤️

Before you switch off completely, it's worth five minutes thinking about September. A lot of businesses use August as a quiet month for hiring, then try to fill three roles at once come the first week back.

👉 If you’ve got a vacancy sitting open, September is a good time to make sure it’s visible to candidates who may be considering their next career move.

👉 Job specs written in a rush in week one are rarely your best work

👉 A five-minute think now saves a scramble later

Have a proper break. But if there's a role you've been putting off sorting, September's the moment to get ahead of it rather than behind it.

Want a hand getting a role ready in September? Get in touch.

Know Your Colour Before Your Next Interview 🎨

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I’m a big believer in the four-colour methodology and what it can tell us about how we behave, communicate, and connect with others.

We often use it in recruitment to help us understand people better, but it can be just as powerful when you turn that understanding on yourself.

Knowing your own natural style can help you recognise the strengths you bring to a role and, importantly, talk about them with confidence at interview.

🔴 Fiery Red – direct, decisive, and results-focused.
Talk about where you’ve taken ownership, made things happen and delivered results.

🟡 Sunshine Yellow – enthusiastic, sociable, and persuasive.
Show how you build relationships, influence others, and bring energy and ideas.

🟢 Earth Green – supportive, patient and relationship-focused.
Talk about how you build trust, support others, and create strong, lasting relationships.

🔵 Cool Blue – analytical, precise, and considered.
Use examples that demonstrate your attention to detail, preparation, and ability to make well-informed decisions.

There isn’t a right or wrong colour. We’re all a mix of all four colours; we just have our own preferences.

The value is in understanding your natural behavioural preferences and being able to explain how you work, how you communicate and what you bring to a team.

Because “I’m a hard worker” tells an interviewer very little.

A great example of how you add value tells them far more.

Do you know which colour leads for you?

Sure look, most of us don’t. We’ve all got that one thing we check first, and if it’s not there, the rest of the advert barely gets a look in.

“Do you have any questions for us?” 😳

And just like that, every single intelligent thought you had leaves your brain through the nearest window.

You had four brilliant questions ready. Where did they go? Nobody knows. Instead, you ask something about annual leave that you already knew the answer to, then spend the walk home thinking of the good ones.

Here’s a wee trick: write your questions down and actually bring the list in with you. Nobody’s going to think less of you for glancing at a note, but everyone will think less of the blank stare that usually happens instead.

Also, “no, I think you’ve covered everything” is always, always a missed opportunity. Ask something. Anything. Even a slightly average question shows you were listening.

We’ve All Googled Our Interviewer
Let’s be honest, we’ve all done it. 🕵️

The interview is booked. And within about four minutes, you’ve found your interviewer’s LinkedIn, worked out where they went to university, and know entirely too much about their five-a-side football team.

It’s not stalking. It’s “research.” 😅

In fairness, a bit of homework is genuinely useful. Knowing a bit about the person and the business shows you’ve made an effort. Just maybe don’t mention the football team unprompted. That’s the line.

Do your research, walk in prepared, and let the rest happen naturally. That’s honestly most of the battle.

Big change coming for anyone who hires. 👀

From 1 January 2027, the qualifying period for unfair dismissal protection drops from two years to six months. The cap on compensatory awards is being removed too.

That means if you took someone on before 1 July 2026, they'll already have the protection in place by the time the law changes. Not next year's problem — this year's.

For businesses, that's a real shift:

👉 Far less time to work out if someone's right for the role before employment protections kick in
👉 Higher financial exposure if a dismissal is later found to be unfair
👉 No more room for the "let's leave it and see" approach to underperformance

The businesses that'll handle this well are the ones tightening up probation, feedback and documentation now, not scrambling in December.

If your process for managing performance in the first few months is more "gut feeling" than paper trail, now's the time to fix that.

Got questions about hiring in the run-up to this change? Drop me a message, always happy to talk it through.

“We’ll be in touch either way.” 🤥

Sure you will.

I’ve heard this line more times than I’ve had hot dinners, and about half the time, “either way” quietly turns into “never.”

Look, I get it. Life gets busy. But if you can find twenty minutes for the interview, you can find twenty seconds for a two-line email.

Ghosting a job seeker isn’t just bad manners, it’s also a great way to make sure the person you didn’t hire tells a few of their mates about it. 😅

Nobody’s asking for an essay. Just something. Even a “not this time, but thank you” does more for your reputation than silence ever will.

Consider this your gentle, mildly cheeky nudge to check your inbox for anyone still waiting to hear back. They probably are.
