I spent a fantastic day in Bristol today attending Action against Medical Accidents - AVMA Cerebral Palsy and Brain Injury conference.

The focus of the day was crucial: asking ourselves what more we, as solicitors, can do to ensure we are delivering the absolute best service to our clients who have sadly suffered catastrophic brain injuries due to clinical negligence.

These cases are complex and life-changing, and it serves as a vital reminder that our work goes far beyond the legal arguments—it is about securing a future for vulnerable individuals and their families.

One of the highlights was catching up with the wider team of professionals who provide such essential support in these cases. It takes a village to rebuild a life, and it was great to connect with specialist barristers, court of protection colleagues, case managers, rehabilitative solution providers, medical experts, diagnostic investigations, insurers, and costs lawyers.

It was also wonderful to make some new connections within the industry. A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to organise today’s event, and to all those who spoke and shared their expertise. Special thanks to Matthew Wightman FCilex not least for keeping me awake on the almost 3 hour rainy drive home!!

We’ve had an extremely busy start to the year tackling a number of complex cases and recent settlements.

After the haze of January and before the onslaught of February, I wanted to take a moment to share this 5-star review.

Securing an admission of liability in a medical negligence claim is never a small feat. I am thrilled that my team and I were able to get this over the line and secure some financial security for this client and her children.

It’s a great reminder that the "busyness" results in real-life impact. Grateful to my client for their trust and for choosing Setfords.

We recently supported a family through the devastating loss of their daughter, tragically stillborn due to medical negligence. It was an incredibly emotional case, but their strength and determination was truly humbling.

Earlier this month, my colleague Matthew Wightman successfully concluded a long-running claim for a young man who received unnecessary surgery to the elbow. Our Client was treated privately by an Orthopedic Surgeon who, against the advice of a colleague and despite nerve conduction studies proving that there was no issue with the ulnar nerve at the elbow, proceeded to operate.

Our Client subsequently developed a chronic pain syndrome in the nerve which had a huge impact on his quality of life. His work was impacted and he needed assistance with various tasks. The claim was complicated by several other serious but unrelated medical conditions, which made defining how his life would have been in the absence of the negligence quite challenging.

Matthews diligence and attention to detail in addressing these complexities ultimately resulted in him securing a life changing settlement for our Client, who can now look to move forwards with his recovery. Great work as always Matthew and a great endorsement on the service provided.

My Setfords Clinical Negligence team was deeply privileged to represent a family in a profoundly tragic case involving the loss of their young daughter.

We were honored to support them through such an incredibly difficult time, ensuring that their voices were heard and justice pursued.

Following inquest, HM Coroner made a report to the Trust, to make changes to their practices in order to prevent future deaths.

This case is a stark reminder of the importance of our work and the trust families place in us during this time. Not only have we been able to secure a sense of justice for the family and ensured their questions were answered, this case has directly changed NHS practices in Northamptonshire, learning lessons and protecting future patients from possible harm.

Our thoughts remain with the family as they continue to navigate this difficult journey.
