Britain's longest divorce lasted more than 23 years - but the real story is why.

⚽ As the World Cup gets underway, many of us will be looking forward to supporting our teams, spending time with family and enjoying the excitement of the competition.

Sadly, research has shown that reports of domestic abuse increase during major football tournaments.

Football does not cause domestic abuse. However, factors such as increased alcohol consumption, heightened emotions and financial pressures can contribute to the escalation of abusive behaviour in relationships where abuse is already present.

Despite what many people believe, couples who live together do not currently have the same legal rights as married couples or civil partners if their relationship ends.

However, this could be set to change. The Ministry of Justice has unveiled proposals to strengthen protections for unmarried couples, a move that could have a significant impact on millions of people across the country.

At Harrogate Family Law, we often speak to clients who are surprised to discover how limited the legal protections are for cohabiting couples, particularly when it comes to finances, property and inheritance.
