Fireworks can cause significant distress. Year on year, petitions seeking tighter restrictions bring the issue before Parliament but make little progress as the evidence of that misuse is thin on the ground because it isn’t reported.

PLEASE REPORT ALL FIREWORK MISUSE TO THE POLICE.

It is illegal to sell “adult” fireworks (category 2 and 3 fireworks) to anyone under 18.

It is illegal to set off fireworks in the street.

It is illegal to throw fireworks, including sparklers.

It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on Bon fire night, when it is midnight and on New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when it is 1am.

Registered sellers can legally sell fireworks between 15 October and 10 November,
26 and 31 December and in the 3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year. Outside of these periods, only licensed shops can sell fireworks.

Offences can carry up to 6 months imprisonment and/or a fine. The law takes it seriously, the police must take it seriously and so should we.
