How Not To Annoy Your Sheriff

Advice from Sheriff Cubie:

1. Organise the productions, make sure they are relevant and importantly, legible;
2. Know your authorities;
3. Be familiar with your court, and sheriff, if coming from out of town and be aware of your surroundings;
4. Know the rules and try to anticipate next steps;
5. Take as full instructions as possible in advance to avoid having to ask your clients for instructions throughout the hearing;
6. Wear business attire;
7. Never be late, phone the court if you know you are going to be late and always apologise if you are;
8. Think about how the timing of your submissions factor into the court day;
9. Be aware of your mannerisms;
10. Don't grandstand for your client;
11. Avoid jokes;
12. Don't feel the need to speak in an overly complicated manner
13. Remember you are making submissions to the court, and avoid referring to your beliefs
14. In examination in chief confront the matters which may not help your case rather than avoid these matters allowing the other side to bring them to light
15. Be respectful and get a reputation for being so
