What does a family solicitor actually do?

When people think of family law, they often picture courtroom dramas and heated legal battles. The reality is very different.

Family solicitors help people through some of life's most challenging moments, from separation and divorce to child contact arrangements, pre-nuptial agreements and family disputes. Behind every case is a real person, a real family and a real story.

In our latest article, Senior Solicitor Laura Cousins shares an insight into a typical day in family law and explains why supporting clients through difficult times is such a rewarding career.

This week, solicitors from our Firm have had the privilege of attending three events connected with the UK Supreme Court’s visit to Scotland.

The events provided valuable reflections from different Justices on a range of topics relevant to family law and litigation practice, offering fascinating insight into the evolving legal landscape and the work of the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, members of the team attended The Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow discussion, “A View from the Thames,” in which Lord Doherty, Justice of the UK Supreme Court, reflected on his early experiences with the UK Supreme Court.

Last night, our Family Law team members, April Campbell, Gabrielle Reilly, and Laura Cousins, also attended a comparative law discussion exploring the concept of matrimonial property and how the English and Scottish legal systems approach family law disputes. Our Litigation Team member, David Phinn, attended a discussion led by The Right Hon The Lord Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court, who set out the work of the Court, shared his thoughts on the rule of law, and offered insights for lawyers starting their careers.

A fantastic opportunity to engage in important legal discussions, hear directly from senior members of the judiciary, and reflect on developments shaping the future of legal practice across Scotland and the wider UK legal system.

Imagine arriving at your business premises tomorrow and finding the building severely damaged by fire.

Does your rent still need to be paid?
Who is responsible for rebuilding?
Could you terminate the lease?
Would insurance actually cover the loss?

Following the recent fire at Glasgow’s Union House, we have put together a practical guide for commercial tenants and business owners in Scotland on what to do if the unexpected happens.

World Cup 2026 is coming… but can your venue stay open late enough?

Licensing rules for the FIFA World Cup 2026 are starting to take shape—and they’re not the same everywhere. Some areas are allowing later opening hours (even after the final whistle), while others are more limited or require advance notice.

The World Cup could be a huge boost for business—but only if you’re properly set up to take advantage of it.

✔️ Check your licence
✔️ Look at your local rules
✔️ Plan ahead now (not the week before kickoff!)

Don’t get caught out when the big games arrive—make sure you’re ready to welcome the crowds.

This week, Glasgow experienced a significant tragedy when a fire devastated the historic Union House — a prominent Victorian landmark at the corner of Union Street and Gordon Street. The B-listed building has long been a familiar sight for many visitors arriving in the city through Central Station.

While investigations continue, our Head of Licensing, Audrey Junner, has written an article exploring the regulatory framework surrounding v**e retail and the level of control Glasgow City Council has over the sale of v**e products.
