Are you ready, set... for World Intellectual Property Day on 26 April 2026? This year World IP Day celebrates how creativity and innovation, backed by IP rights, keep the world of sports thriving, dynamic and accessible for everyone, everywhere. Cutting-edge equipment, team identities, broadcasts of unforgettable sporting moments and more: intellectual property (IP) is key to protecting and promoting the inventions, designs, brands and stories that drive the world of sports, inspire athletes and unite fans everywhere. Sports aren’t just about the game — they intersect with fashion, entertainment, media, health, gaming and consumer goods. IP such as patents, designs, trademarks, and copyrights, incentivizes innovation and enables cross-industry connections with sport, sparking creativity, technological advancement and economic growth. Even when you’re outside the stadium or off the court, sports and IP are part of your daily life – just look down at the sneakers on your feet.

Yesterday Cloch lawyer Philip Hannay returned (for a 12th year) to the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow to deliver a two-hour overview of intellectual property in the commercialisation of the biosciences to MSc Technology Transfer and Commercialisation of Bioscience postgraduates. The course equips students with the knowledge and skills to take a bioscience research idea from the bench to a viable business venture and, focuses on questions such as: What is IPR and why is it important to the life sciences? How IP relates to the life cycle of a bioscience product? What are patentable ideas and what other IP rights (trademarks, copyrights) exist? Why balance the rights of business originators/owners and interested third parties? The February class is generally populated by students from PGT masters courses in biotechnology, biotechnology and management, biomedical sciences, cancer sciences, brain sciences, immunology, infection biology and food security. Around 40 students attended.
