Many people assume that being named as someone’s next of kin gives them the legal right to make important decisions on their behalf. However, in England and Wales, that is not automatically the case.

If someone loses mental capacity, a next of kin may be consulted, but they do not necessarily have the authority to manage finances, deal with property or make health and care decisions.

We’re pleased to welcome Steve Lewsey to Belcher Addison as our new Practice Manager.

Steve joined the firm on 1 September 2026, bringing experience from two other local law firms where he also worked as Practice Manager. Before moving into the legal sector, Steve completed a full career in the British Army as a Human Resources specialist.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, particularly his granddaughter.

We’re delighted to have Steve on board and look forward to the experience he brings to the team.

Golf all round for Belcher Addison last week.

We were delighted to sponsor the Addison Bowl at Hayling Golf Club, a fantastic day of competitive golf across 21 teams, with Director and Solicitor Chris Halliwell representing the firm on the day. Hayling put in a brilliant performance, finishing second overall behind eventual winners Rowlands Castle, with standout under-par rounds from Toby Burden and Richard Harris. Great to see the event go from strength to strength, and thank you to everyone at the club for making it such a memorable day.

We also supported Chichester Rotary Club's charity golf day at Chichester Golf Club, offering a gift of free Wills for auction in aid of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust. A great cause and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Two events, two courses, one very busy week for the team. Thank you to everyone who made both days such a success.
