Today is World Listening Day, and listening is pretty important to us. Now, we don’t celebrate every national day, as, let’s be honest, there are some pretty ridiculous ones, but this seemed one worth mentioning. Because when it comes to what we do, it is all about listening to what you guys need and supporting you to achieve that. More importantly, you should be encouraged to listen to your children and reassure them that everything will be okay.
We found a paragraph on nationaltoday.com that resonated with us, and we wanted to share it:

‘Listening is indeed an art that requires undivided attention and patience from a person and benefits another who is in need of it. Listening is also beneficial for the listener, improving their listening skills and sharpening their awareness of their surroundings. As important as our sense of hearing is, we often don’t use it effectively, blocking out most sounds and voices, and not really listening to the message.’

Kinda cool, right? Listening is a skill that doesn’t always come easily, but it’s worth learning.

Monday was also Global Hug Your Kids Day, which seems quite fitting. So, before you tuck them into bed tonight, please do two things: firstly, ask them if they want to talk about anything and listen…truly listen to what they have to say, and secondly, hug them tight. These years pass so fast.

Now the summer holidays are almost upon us, we wanted to check in with a little reminder that these next six weeks do not have to be perfect.

It can be such a difficult time for a family; juggling work and children is challenging. And it can trigger a lot of emotions…not all positive ones. And that is normal.

TV adverts often perceive the summer holidays as full of moments, but that’s not the reality for many. We mustn’t overlook the challenges these six long weeks can bring to families and relationships. As the excitement increases, tensions can also increase. The allure of extended leisure time often puts unrealistic expectations on family members, causing stress that simmers beneath the surface…but eventually, that stress can boil over.

With children off school and parents juggling work and holiday plans, finding a harmonious balance becomes crucial. The pressure to create picture-perfect memories can lead to financial strain and emotional exhaustion. Moreover, different travel destinations and activity preferences may trigger conflicts that demand thoughtful communication and compromise. Let’s acknowledge that the summertime strains are normal and valid, not an indictment of our bonds. By fostering open dialogue, setting realistic expectations, and prioritising quality time over perfection, we can transform these challenges into opportunities for growth and understanding.

Together, let’s embrace the imperfections of summer and cherish the moments that truly matter.

We don’t just care about people here at McKenzie Law Partners; we also care about animals and our planet. So, we felt strongly that plastic-free July should be recognised as an important date in our calendar.

First off, plastic pollution is wreaking havoc on our marine ecosystems. Countless animals are suffering from entanglement or mistakenly ingesting plastic, which can lead to injury, suffocation, or even death. By reducing our plastic usage, we’re helping protect these incredible creatures and preserve the delicate balance of marine life.

Moreover, plastic takes centuries to decompose. That means the plastic bottle you used for just a few minutes will stick around long after you’re gone. It’s estimated that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish. That’s a pretty grim forecast, but by participating in Plastic-Free July, we’re actively working to reverse this trend.

So, let’s embrace this occasion with open arms. Let’s challenge ourselves to find innovative alternatives, support local businesses that prioritise sustainable packaging, and spread the word about the importance of living plastic-free. Together, we can make a significant impact and create a brighter, cleaner future for future generations.

Here at McKenzie Law Partners, we specialise in Family Law, but what does that cover? Good question. We offer many services, but today, we will discuss supporting you with Court Attendance…
Facing a courtroom and/or a hearing can be a daunting prospect for anyone. Rest assured, you do not have to attend court hearings alone. That is what we are here for!

We must clarify that we cannot guarantee ‘rights of audience’ in court because our regulator is not covered for reserved activities. But there is a strong presumption for litigants-in-person to take a lay adviser to court. We attend court as your ‘McKenzie Friend’. We can be with you, quietly advise you, and take notes on the proceedings. If the judge permits it, we might be able to address the court on your behalf. But whether we are addressing the court or you are, the same message will be given because we will guide you on what to say.

If you want a guarantee that someone can address the court on your behalf, we can refer to our solicitor to deal with the hearing or a direct access barrister.

To learn more, drop us an email or call and let’s see how we could work together…

This post makes us very, very happy! Why? Because it’s about kindness and appreciation.

As a thank you for his hard work, loyalty, and commitment, Andrew was gifted with this: a brand-new garden. The whole area was previously a beach of stone…no grass, no plants, nothing of beauty. Oh, and Andrew’s lady palm tree; she was there from day one. In fact, she was the only thing that he has grown successfully apart from his children that is. This beautiful plant became part of Andrew’s garden the day he moved in back in 2003! She is magnificent.

We don’t expect gifts like these, but we won’t grumble when it happens. It shows that everything we aim to do is working, both for us and our clients.

Who likes Wimbledon? Because it starts today! And what could be more British than this?

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Held annually at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, Wimbledon is renowned for its grass courts, strict dress code, and rich history dating back to 1877. Players donning all-white attire and the lush green courts create an iconic and timeless spectacle…it is a date in many calendars every July.

Each summer, Wimbledon attracts the world’s top tennis players, vying for glory in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events. It is also notable for its unique traditions, such as the consumption of strawberries and cream by spectators (our favourite bit), and the Royal Box, where members of the British Royal Family often watch the action.

Wimbledon is not just a tennis tournament; it’s a symbol of the sport’s heritage, showcasing a blend of history, competition, and pageantry that continues to captivate fans around the globe.

So, if tennis is your thing…enjoy!

Where are all the dog lovers? 🫶

Meet Norman and Scotch. These guys are a much-loved part of the team, but sadly, we often question whether they are pulling their weight…

As you have guessed, we are dog people, and we strongly support the phrase ‘a dog is a man’s best friend. In fact, if Andrew isn’t working, he is usually found doing one of three things…spending time with his family, playing the piano, or walking one of these cheeky chappies.

Life can be stressful. We all know that juggling work and relationships and often complex legal cases can take its toll on our mental health. Our role here at McKenzie Law Partners is to try to reduce that stress, but there are things you can do yourself to release those endorphins.

Going for a walk is a great stress reliever for us, and if Norman and Scotch get to join in our mini adventures too, everyone is happy. Get outside this weekend and enjoy the summer in its full glory!

The starting point for any separated parent who cannot resolve parent-sharing arrangements with their ex-partner is a order (CAO) using form C100.

There can be many reasons for applying to the court, such as a history of domestic abuse, parental alienation or hostility to contact, or a complete breakdown in communications and trust. The list goes on. Through the CAO, the court will gather the necessary evidence to make the required welfare decisions for the child or children of the family. It will include:
• essential safeguarding reports
• social worker reports (section 7 report)
• the possibility of an evidential fact-finding hearing (FFH). This may become necessary to build a factual matrix of information
• recommendations and guidance from child-related professionals
• a final welfare hearing

Depending upon the complexity of the issues before the court, the entire process can take one to two years. For this reason, the court often requires parents to attempt mediation first and attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting).

Do you read our blog? In this blog we focused on managing our client’s expectations and helping them be realistic regarding what to expect regarding Children Act Private Law court cases. Managing clients’ expectations when going through the child arrangements order (CAO) process is crucial and perhaps the most important function we fulfil.

Unless a party has experience going through the family court, nothing can adequately prepare parties, even those legally represented, for what comes next. To begin with, it is seldom over and done within one hearing. The gaps between multiple hearings are getting wider and run for many months, not weeks, with rare exceptions. The most straightforward case journey, where this is a dispute over contact with low-level allegations, will likely require three to four hearings from start to completion. And that can, and often does, take more than one year.

It is not uncommon for one party to feel a sense of injustice at the benefit of the other party for the vast majority of the case journey.
