Say hello to our Scottish Legal Awards Judges 👋

We’re delighted to introduce Patricia Thom, President of the Law Society of Scotland 2025/26.

Patricia originally qualified in Canada, earning her LLB from the University of Saskatchewan before qualifying as a barrister and solicitor in both the Northwest Territories and Alberta. After five years of practice, she relocated to Scotland and requalified as a Scottish solicitor.

Her career in Scotland spans both public and private practice. She began with the Scottish Regional Council (later the Scottish Borders Council), where she advised on a wide range of legal matters including copyright, computer contracts, social work, and education.

After 13 years in local government, Patricia moved into private practice, focusing primarily on civil court work with a strong emphasis on family law and adults with incapacity matters. She later established her own practice, broadening her work to include executries and employment law while continuing her focus on family law.

Alongside her practice, Patricia has held a number of key roles within the Law Society of Scotland. Elected to Council in 2015, she went on to serve as Convener of the Civil Legal Aid Committee from 2020. She retired from practice in 2021 and continues to contribute to the profession as a Safeguarder, Curator, and Child Welfare Reporter, as well as representing the Haddington, Peebles, Jedburgh, Duns and Selkirk constituency on the Law Society Council.
