Choosing a Will writer can feel a bit like choosing a tradesperson. Everyone sounds confident. Everyone says they are careful. But one of the simplest ways to sort confidence from real accountability is to look for professional membership.

The Society of Will Writers is often described as the largest self-regulatory body in the country for the Will writing industry. That matters because it nudges the whole process away from vague promises and towards clear standards. Members are expected to follow a code of practice, keep their knowledge fresh through regular training, and behave in a way that puts Clients first.

In our latest article, we go into this in more detail. Why not take a few minutes out of your day to check it out at: https://www.caseyandassociates.co.uk/how-the-society-of-will-writers-protects-you-as-a-client

What if... your children inherited a large sum at 18?

For many parents, the idea of leaving an inheritance is about creating opportunities and providing security for their children. But would an 18-year-old be ready to manage a substantial amount of money responsibly?
Whilst some young adults may handle an inheritance wisely, others may lack the life experience needed to make long-term financial decisions. Without the right safeguards in place, funds intended to support their future could be spent quickly or invested poorly.

This is where a Trust can help. Rather than passing assets directly to a beneficiary at a specific age, a Trust allows you to set rules around when and how money is released. For example, funds could be made available in stages, used for education or purchasing a first home, or managed by trustees until your child reaches a more appropriate age.

By planning ahead, you can ensure your inheritance provides lasting support and protection, giving your children the best possible start in life while helping to safeguard their financial future.

Despite the similar name, there is a significant difference between Joint Tenancy and Tenants In Common, as explained here.

From an estate planning perspective, how a property is owned can have a major impact on what happens to it when someone passes away. With Joint Tenancy, the property automatically passes to the surviving owner(s), regardless of what is stated in a Will. In contrast, Tenants In Common allows each owner to hold a distinct share, which can be left to chosen beneficiaries through a Will.

Understanding this distinction is essential, as it can affect inheritance outcomes, tax planning, and the level of control individuals have over their estate. At Casey & Associates, we can provide advice on each aspect of your estate planning, including helping you to understand whether your property ownership structure aligns with your wishes and long-term plans.

Itโ€™s fair to say that estate planning not being part of the national curriculum leaves people with a lot of catching up to do later on in life, when the time comes for them to start thinking about it.

But is it time for that to change?

At what point should we start teaching people how to deal with inheritance, Wills, and long-term financial planning - is it something that should be introduced earlier in education, or does it risk being too much too soon for young people?

And if it were taught in schools, what do you think it should actually cover - the legal basics, the practical steps, or more of a life skills approach around planning and decision-making?

We are interested to hear different perspectives on this.

Choosing an executor is a major decision - theyโ€™ll be responsible for dealing with your assets, managing paperwork, handling probate, paying debts, and distributing inheritance. But one of the biggest mistakes people make is naming someone without telling them.

When an executor is unprepared or unaware, it can lead to delays, stress, refusals at the last minute, and even mistakes that could cost your loved ones time and money. Executors need to understand what the role involves, feel confident managing the responsibilities, and be willing to step in when the time comes.

At Casey & Associates, we guide you on choosing the right executor, explain the role in plain English, and help you avoid the pitfalls that lead to complications later. If needed, we can also discuss professional executor options to ensure everything is handled smoothly.
