💡 What Is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) — and Why Are They Important?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people you trust — known as your attorneys — to make decisions on your behalf if you ever become unable to do so yourself.
There are two types of LPA:
1️⃣ Property and Financial Affairs – covers things like managing your bank accounts, paying bills, or selling your home.
2️⃣ Health and Welfare – covers decisions about your medical treatment, daily care, and where you live.
✅ Benefits of Having an LPA in Place:
* Peace of mind: You decide who will act for you, rather than leaving it up to the courts.
* Avoids delays and stress: Without an LPA, your loved ones would need to apply to the Court of Protection to manage your affairs – a time-consuming and costly process.
* Flexibility: You can choose when your LPA takes effect and set out clear instructions or preferences.
* Protects your wishes: Ensures your values and choices are respected if you lose capacity due to illness, accident, or age.
🕊️ It’s never too early to plan ahead. Setting up an LPA while you’re fit and well can make life much easier for you and your family later on.
