With an estimated 900+ residential properties affected in Dundee alone, RAAC is one of the more pressing issues facing the Scottish property market right now. For anyone buying or selling a home, understanding what it means in practice matters.

William Allardice and Laura Franceschi from our residential property team have written a clear guide to what buyers, sellers and lenders need to consider before a transaction progresses. They understand the RAG rating system used to assess structural risk, disclosure obligations under Scots Law, and the role conveyancers play in identifying potential red flags early.

If you are involved in a property transaction and the question of RAAC has been raised, or you simply want to know what to look for, it's worth a read: https://buff.ly/LSov81m

Our Inverness team is looking forward to attending this year’s Highlands & Islands Green Energy Conference as exhibitors alongside organisations from across Scotland’s renewable energy sector.

As the transition to net zero continues to accelerate, legal expertise has an important role to play in supporting the development of energy projects, infrastructure and investment across the Highlands and Islands.

Thorntons has extensive experience advising clients across the renewables, land and rural business, commercial property and corporate sectors, and we’re pleased to be part of the conversation around the opportunities and challenges shaping Scotland’s green energy future.

If you’re attending the conference, come and speak to the team at our exhibition stand.

Most charity lotteries are leaving money on the table. Not through poor fundraising but through marketing law they haven't caught up with yet.

Thorntons' Liam McMonagle, Partner in Intellectual Property, and Morgan O'Neill, Director of Data Protection Services, spoke at the Lotteries Council Annual Conference on exactly this: how the Data Use and Access Act 2025 opens up new opportunities for charity lotteries to reach supporters and donors compliantly.

The key takeaway? Soft opt-in, used correctly, gives charities a practical route to engage lapsed or prospective supporters without falling foul of PECR or GDPR.

In practice, that means:
Transparency at sign-up about how supporter data will be used
Suppression and preference management that holds up to scrutiny
Messaging that reflects your values, not just your legal obligations
Data governance that protects supporters and your reputation

The session also covered wider enforcement trends and real case studies from the sector.

If you work in or advise the charity lottery space, this is worth understanding before your next campaign goes out. Get in touch with our data protection team to find out more: https://buff.ly/b5O9mfG

Securing investment is rarely just about the headline number. It’s also about protecting future growth from day one.

Thorntons recently advised Hosel, a fast-growing golf comparison marketplace, described as “Skyscanner for golf”, on its successful £500,000 fundraise, led by London-based Ascension Ventures.

Our Ventures and Innovations team provided strategic legal advice across the transaction, ensuring the company was well-positioned not just to close, but to scale.

Our work included:

- Structuring the deal from the outset, including advising on the initial term sheet
- Managing complex negotiations across multiple stakeholders, from the lead investor to individual business angels
- Delivering clear, commercially-focused transaction documentation through to completion
- Supporting long-term platform growth through bespoke intellectual property (IP) work, including tailored marketplace vendor terms and conditions

The transaction was led by Partner Alistair Lang, with Senior Solicitor Hannah Smethurst leading day-to-day ex*****on and Solicitor Frankie Cusack supporting. Partner Liam McMonagle and Senior Solicitor Megan Craig continue to help facilitate the platform’s future growth with IP advice.

For founders and investors alike, this deal highlights the value of integrated legal advice that balances speed, protection and ambition.

UKREiif brought together some of the most important conversations in UK real estate this week, and we were glad to be part of them.

David Milne, Jayne Macfarlane, Janet McIntyre and Ricardo Matteo represented the firm in Leeds, meeting clients, contacts and collaborators across the three days. As Jayne reflects in her post, the event keeps growing in significance, and it's not hard to see why: the quality of dialogue on investment, development and the built environment is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in the calendar.

We left with plenty to think about and a number of conversations worth continuing. If you were at UKREiif and didn't manage to connect with our team, we'd welcome the chance to pick up the conversation now: https://www.thorntons-law.co.uk/make-an-enquiry

AI-generated logos are quick and cheap. That is exactly why they deserve more scrutiny, not less.

More businesses, particularly start-ups, are turning to AI to build their brand identity. While the cost savings are immediate, the legal risks are harder to see and when they do arise, the impact can be significant.

In our latest blog, our Intellectual Property team set out the key risks: from copyright protection and infringement to registration challenges and platform terms that may leave you without full ownership of your own branding.

The consequences of using AI can extend beyond a rebranding exercise; an unresolved IP issue can affect investment rounds and sale processes.
