I was delighted today to be asked by Mo Egan Head of the Law School at Stirling Univeristy to return to do some teaching on the Llb course. Trusts and sucession module of course. I think I have been missing the bright and eager faces of the am students and am greatly looking forward to it. Thanks Mo!

This will be a short contract and will in no way stop me dealing with my private clients. You guys always be my priority!

Life is busy!

I am delighted to have been asked to help out this month by three organisations:

1. I'm giving a seminar on powers of attorney and wills to the Carers Network who are an amazing group of employees of the Scottish Qualifications Authority. I'm looking forward to finding out about their own needs as well as those they care for.

2. Women in Wills has organised a cross jurisduction seminar to talk about essential validity of will and intestacy laws in different countries. I'm representing Scotland and there will be other speakers from England, Spain and France and there will also be a speaker talking about Islamic Wills. I think this will be so interesting.

3. TASH for Ukraine is an amazing Scottish charity which has been sending humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine since the war started. I have been volunteering with them for a while and am now going to join the fabulous board of Trustees. My experience on the board of Citizens Advice Stirling will be useful and I am very much looking forward to helping look at the systems already in place.

If anyone would like more information about any of the above or to be involved in Women in Wills just drop me a line.

Donations or avenues for revenue for TASH are always welcome.

Many thanks everyone.

I'm delighted to have been able to join Alex Dockar of St James Place to present our Pre Retirement Seminar to Edinburgh University staff last week. It was a lively group and the feedback we have recived is that everyone found the presenations thought provoking and useful.

As a result of what they heard, a number of delates have asked me to meet with them to update Wills and put Powers of Attorney in place. It's so good that the benefit of doing this is apprecaited and they have acted upon it.

If anyone would like information about the benefits of setting up PoAs please message me.

I have recently been consulted by two couples who have returned from South Africa leaving some assets in that country. With this is mind and the question of double taxation, this article in this months Law Society of Scotland journal makes interesting reading.

Some key issues, and how they might be tackled, in dealing with an estate that includes assets located abroad

I'm pleased to confirm that despite rising costs I am able to hold my current fees for preparing both Wills and Powers of Attorney until the end of the year. Instructions received during the month of November will enable the whole process to be completed this year so that you can go into 2023 with peace of mind.

Virtual and face to face appointments available.

I am really pleased over the last six months or so to have seen a steady increase in enquiries about Powers of Attorney. These documents are like an insurance policy but so much more valuable.

Hopefully they will never be needed, but boy , you and your family will be glad you took the time to put one in place if you are ever in a position, temporarily or permanently, of being unable to make decisions for yourself.

I am happy to talk through the pros and cons and can provide written information about how they work for anyone who has had this on their mind.

Before the Christmas hiatus, now is a good time to tick this off your "to do" list.

I have recently received an equiry about a "living will" and what it does.

Actually the name is a contradiction as a conventional Will only takes affect when one passes away. A living will is in fact a medical directive setting out what you do and do not want to happen if you loose the ability to make your wishes known to medical attendants and appoints a proxy to speak on your behalf in those circumstances.

If anyone is interested in exploring this and or a Power of Attorney which can contain similar powers in more formal way, please do get in touch.

I have recently stood down from teaching trust and sucession law at Stirling University after 10 happy years.

I am looking forward to concentrating on writing Wills and Powers of Attorneys for my own clients and building my practise. I have now have extended capacity for both in person and virtual appointments into the autumn and look forward from hearing from anyone who would like an initial chat, which I conduct at my own expense.

Please share with your friends.
Many thanks to all,
Julia

I am delighted to have been asked to teach how best to take instructions for Wills and Powers of Attorney to post graduate students on the on line Diploma in Profession Legal Practice at Robert Gordon's university. We shall then go on to draft the necessary documents. I haven't taught post graduates before and am looking forward to it.

Fear not! I will still have plenty of time to draft Wills for anyone who needs one. Happy to help in any way I can. Please don't hesitate to get in touch.

As Chancellor Rishi Sunak assesses how to pay for the furlough scheme a number of taxes are reportedly being considered . These include alterations to the current Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax rules and a possible new wealth tax.

If writing your Will has been on your to "do list" for a while then NOW is the time to act. The changes have not yet been finalised or brought in. If you can arrange your affairs now then you may be able to save your beneficaries a considerable amont of unnecessary tax.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss your own circumstances.

The end of another busy week and it has been good to be able to help so many people to tick " write will" off their "to do" lists. Being able to see and interview clients remotely has been remarkably straightforward and successful with virtually no teething problems. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch and for those who have been so complimentary about the service I offer. It is rewarding to be able to create a little peace of mind in these troubled times.
