We share the nation’s sadness following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Thank you ma’am for your 70 years of service and unwavering dedication. Our thoughts are with The Royal Family at this time.

Since King Charles III has declared Monday 19th of September a Bank Holiday and a National Day of Mourning for The Queen’s funeral, our office will close. We will be in touch to rearrange any appointments already in our diary for that date.

May she rest in peace. 🕊

Cranleigh High Street is looking very patriotic this Jubilee weekend! 👑🇬🇧

Our office is participating in Cranleigh In Bloom, and the flowers on display this year are beautiful. A fitting tribute to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 years of service.

Thanks goes to David at Baskets In Bloom for potting them for us (which he prepares months in advance) and to the team behind who work hard behind the scenes to help us brighten up our High Street! It makes such a difference to our Village.

We hope you continue to enjoy the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.🥂

A lovely testimonial received this week and posted for .

While making a will is one of the most important things you can do for your loved ones during your lifetime, it is equally as important that you understand it. We take the time to explain everything to you in plain English and tailor it to your unique circumstances. A will should not be seen as a document that is a ‘one size fits all’ and should be as unique as you are.

Prince Philip’s will is to remain secret for (at least) 90 years.

A recent ruling in the Family Division of the High Court means that the Duke of Edinburgh’s will is to be sealed from public view. This means its contents will remain secret for the next 90 years, joining some 30 other Royal wills. The value of the estate was also ordered to be excluded from the grant of probate.

The sealing of wills belonging to members of the Royal Family is not new and the late Duke of Edinburgh is not the first Royal to have the contents of his will hidden from public view. Since 1910 it has been commonplace for an application to be made to seal a senior Royal’s will to protect it from public scrutiny. The practice dates back to the death of Prince Francis of Teck who died suddenly at the age of 40 and whose will was quickly sealed to avoid a potential scandal bringing the Royal Family into disrepute due to a large legacy he had left to his mistress. This set the precedent for applications for wills to be sealed in circumstances where public inspection of the document would be ‘undesirable or inappropriate’.

Some, rightly or wrongly, argue this is unfair. But what does this mean for the rest of us - the general public? This serves as an important reminder that wills are published and do become public documents once probate is granted. While it is fine to include messages to family, non-binding wishes or explanations as to why a certain person has been left out in a will I often recommend keeping these kinds of sentiments confined to a separate letter for this very reason – especially if the message or explanation is particularly personal.

Please call us on 01483 383500 so that we may help you prepare your will in the most appropriate way for your circumstances.

Any of these sound familiar?

“I have mostly debts”: Many think they only have debts to their name however, most people are worth much more than they think. For example, a life insurance policy, even one designed to repay a mortgage, can make your estate much more valuable on death. When you start adding the value of the contents in your home, your jewellery, your car, your pension … it all adds up.

“I am young and won’t die for a long time”: With luck, you may be right. But it is a mistake to view a will as something just for the elderly. You should consider a will in the same way as insurance. It is a relatively low cost option for your family to avoid the difficulties that may follow if you did die without a will in place.

“I don’t want to think about it”: You’re certainly not alone. The thought is never a pleasant one. But just think of the uncertainty you’d leave behind for your loved ones if you don’t take a proactive approach. Although it gives you peace of mind during your lifetime, a will is often more valuable for those you leave behind. Wendy makes the whole process much less daunting than it may seem and the majority of our clients feel much better once it’s done.

“Wills are expensive to make”: If you have a complicated estate worth a vast sum, then you will want a level of estate planning that does come at a cost. However, for the average person they may not need anything too complex and our standard fees provide for most people’s circumstances. The initial meeting is a fixed fee, regardless of circumstances, and the options available to you are discussed at the outset giving you a clear picture to help you decide how your will should be drafted.
