Travel Consent – Do you need it?

It’s that time of year again. School holidays are just around the corner; travel arrangements have been made and there is excitement in the air. But wait! Are you sure you haven’t forgotten anything?

Many people are not aware that when a minor child travels without both his/her parents, the accompanying adult is frequently asked to produce proof that they have consent to travel with the child.

Most countries accept a letter, or Affidavit of Consent from the non-travelling parent(s) provided it is notarised. This document may need to be produced on leaving and returning to the UK and also, upon entry to other countries during the course of the trip.

As a Notary Public, working throughout Essex and Suffolk, my individual seal of office is recognised world-wide. I can draft the necessary travel documents for you and in most cases, your document will be ready to take away with you the day that we meet.

Remember, I also provide a mobile Notary Public service and regularly visit Sudbury, Ipswich, Frinton on Sea and many other areas and can offer out of hours appointments.

Travel safely and be prepared!

When a lovely client calls to see you after a particularly lengthy case (which ended extremely well) to say thank you...Happy Easter everyone!

With Easter fast approaching, I am being contacted by many people who need me to notarise Permission to Travel documents for their minor children. People often think that such a document is not required if the child is travelling with one of the parents but this is not always the case. The safest way forward is to ensure that a valid and well drafted Permission to Travel given by the non-travelling parent or parents, accompanies the minor child who is travelling abroad.
I am always happy to discuss your requirements and explain the options by telephone so please - don't be caught out and ensure that you have your Permission to Travel documents prepared in good time.

One World at University of Essex!
What a fantastic sight at University of Essex today as students parade with flags of the many countries represented at the University. The “One World” event is a fitting celebration of the fact that currently more than 152 countries are represented by students/staff at the University, bringing a diversity of cultures and experiences to one place. Essex should be proud!

Thinking of changing your name? Many people do! A Notary Public can draft the necessary legal document to record the change of name but it is important to be aware that there are several options available to you – including solicitors and online services. The important point to note is that charges for the service can vary enormously and so a little research may help you to identify the most cost effective option for you, taking into account the number of original/certified copies you may require. When pondering your choice of new name however, you may wish to "bear" in mind the woman who was refused a passport in her chosen new name of Pudsey Bear on the basis it was considered "frivolous"...!!

Not everyone is aware that Birth Certificates are subject to Crown copyright and may not be freely photocopied. Clients are often disappointed to find that I cannot simply certify a photocopy they have made. Moreover, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will reject a photocopy if you submit one for legalisation. The way forward is to obtain a copy of the original entry which is already certified by an official of the General Register Office, and which can have an Apostille directly attached if one is required. In Notarial matters, as in life, there is usually a way forward even it it isn't the route you originally envisaged!
