Prime Minister Announces PC Andrew Harper's Killers To Stay In Jail - following relentless Thames Valley Police Federation Campaign.

Chair Aileen O'Connor reacts after Andy Burnham announced this morning the killers of PC Andrew Harper would now NOT be eligible for early release.

Aileen said: “PC Andrew Harper made the ultimate sacrifice for the job that he loved, serving communities, serving society.

“His killers should never have been considered for early release. It remains shocking that they were.

“We are pleased that the Government - despite what was frankly initial reluctance – has eventually listened, seen sense and made the right decision to keep these lowlifes behind bars.

“They had no option.

“The weight of public and policing opinion against such plans was overwhelming.

“The fact that more than 1 million people signed our petition over this was a historic public backing for police officers.

“The fact 50 Chief Constables across the UK wrote an open letter calling for the Government to reconsider was unprecedented.

“The right and proper decision has been made.”

Aileen added: “There is wider good news here that – as a result of our campaigning work – a wider collection of criminals will not be eligible for early release so there is better news today for many more families.”

Aileen concluded: “We would like to offer huge thanks to everyone who backed our campaign.

“The one million people who signed our petition and all those who offered messages of support. You have made a difference.

“Police officers put themselves in harm's way every day.

“They head towards danger when everyone else is running away.

“They do so knowing that they may never come home to their families. We have only seen in recent days in Cleveland, the danger colleagues face.

“Our thoughts remain with the families of PC Tom Clough and PC Matthew Blades.

“And – as always – our thoughts remain with Andrew’s wife Lissie, his family, friends and close colleagues in Thames Valley Police.”

Civil Nuclear Police Federation has offered condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of PC Tom Clough and PC Matthew Blades, officers from Cleveland Police who were killed on duty in the early hours of Saturday morning.

PC Clough, pictured below, had previously served with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary. Darren Adams, Chair of the Federation, said: "Tom was held in very high regard by his colleagues, and we know his loss is being felt across the Force. Anyone affected by Tom's tragic death can contact us in confidence."

The death of our colleagues in Cleveland offers a stark reminder of the dangers police officers across the country face. There has been an outpouring of support for the officers' families, with a fundraising page receiving tens of thousands of donations in a matter of hours.

A personal message from Lauren Somerville, Chair of Cleveland Police Federation, following today's tragic events.

"The tragic loss of PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough has had a profound impact on colleagues across the force and the wider policing family.

"They were 37 and 38.

"Our thoughts are first and foremost with their families, friends and loved ones as they face an unimaginable loss.

"Today, our priority is ensuring that officers and staff receive the support they need. We recognise that incidents such as this affect people in different ways, and it is vital that everyone has access to the welfare support, guidance and care available to them.

"We are working closely with the force to support all officers and staff affected by this tragedy. A great deal of work is taking place behind the scenes to ensure that colleagues are looked after and that appropriate support is available both now and in the weeks ahead.

"We are a small force, and losses like this are felt deeply. Matthew and Tom were not just colleagues; they were friends, teammates and valued members of the policing family.

"Their loss will be felt by our whole police family.

CNP Federation has cautiously welcomed the Home Office's announcement of an end-to-end review into the police misconduct system, chaired by Dame Lynne Owens and Jason Beer KC.

For years, Federations have raised concerns over a misconduct process that too often leaves officers suspended or restricted from duty for months, sometimes years, before being cleared of any wrongdoing. None of us wants to serve alongside someone who isn’t fit to wear the uniform, but leaving colleagues in limbo takes its toll on officers' mental health, careers and families.

We have long argued that the current thresholds and procedures need fundamental reform, not tinkering at the edges. A system that keeps innocent officers away from frontline policing for excessive periods serves neither the public nor the police. Equally, we recognise that victims deserve swifter resolution, and a fairer, faster process benefits everyone.

We are pleased this review will examine the whole and will report to the Home Secretary and Lord Chancellor within six months. We urge the review team to engage directly with officers who have experienced these delays firsthand, and we will make that case robustly.

Reform is long overdue, and we hope this marks the beginning of real change.

Huge thanks to everyone who has supported the 12-hour padelathon for The Police Treatment Centres so far.

On Friday, our Chair Darren Adams joined Federation Reps, trustees and supporters of the charity to battle it out on the padel court and raise as much money as possible for the PTC's essential services 🎾

Not content with that physical challenge, players hopped on static bikes between games to cover the distance between the two treatment centres as many times as possible 🚲

Plus, they did this on one of the hottest days of the year 🥵

The padelathon for The Police Treatment Centres is underway! Follow the PTC's stories today for behind-the-scenes action.

As a reminder, not only are we playing padel for 12 hours non-stop, but when we're not on the court, we're cycling on static bikes, trying to cover the distance between the PTCs in Harrogate and Auchterarder as many times as possible.
