An LPA is about planning for a time when you may be unable to make certain decisions yourself.

That could be because of illness, an accident or another circumstance affecting your ability to make decisions. In England and Wales, you must be 18 or over and have mental capacity when you make an LPA.

There are two types:
Property & Financial Affairs
Health & Welfare

The important thing is that you can only put an LPA in place while you have the capacity to do so.
So don't think of an LPA as something you only need “when you're older”.

Think of it as planning ahead while you have the choice.

"When someone dies, one of the things families can find difficult is not knowing what happens next.

If the person left a Will, the named executors may need to apply for a Grant of Probate.

If there isn't a valid Will, the process is different and administrators may need to apply for a Grant of Letters of Administration.

Think of it this way:
A Will sets out what you want to happen to your estate after you die.
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows someone you trust to make certain decisions on your behalf during your lifetime if you're unable to make those decisions yourself.

There are two types of LPA:
Property & Financial Affairs
Health & Welfare

You can choose to have one or both.

When someone we love dies, there is a lot to think about, often at a time when it can be difficult to know where to begin.

Alongside the emotional side of losing someone, there may also be practical matters to deal with, such as:
