🚨From 1 October 2026, Employment Tribunal time limits will increase from 3 months to 6 months.

Are your records and processes ready for the change?

An Employment Tribunal is where many workplace disputes are formally dealt with if they cannot be resolved earlier.

For business owners, this is a useful reminder to keep good records when workplace issues come up.

That might include:

▪️ What was discussed
▪️ What was agreed
▪️ What action was taken
▪️ When decisions were made
▪️ Who was involved

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Clear notes, sensible processes and a calm approach can make things much easier to deal with later.

Employment issues are stressful enough without having to piece together what happened months down the line.

If you employ staff and want to feel clearer about your position, now is a good time to sense-check your processes.

🚨 Data protection complaints rules are now in force. Has your business caught up?

Since June 2026, businesses and organisations that handle personal data have needed a clear process for dealing with data protection complaints.

In simple terms, if someone raises a concern about how their data has been handled, your business should be ready to:

▪️ Acknowledge the complaint within 30 days
▪️ Look into it properly
▪️ Keep the person informed
▪️ Explain the outcome clearly

For many business owners, this may not feel like the most exciting admin job on the list.

But having a clear process in place can help concerns get resolved earlier, reduce confusion, and lower the chance of things escalating to the ICO.

If your business handles customer, client, staff or supplier data, this is a good moment to check whether your complaints process is clear, practical and easy to follow.

If you are unsure where to start, or whether your current process is enough, you know what to do...

FAQ Friday 💬

❓ Can I rely on AI for legal advice?

AI tools can be useful.

They can help you draft, organise your thoughts, summarise information, or get a starting point when you’re not sure where to begin.

But when it comes to legal issues, a starting point is not the same as advice tailored to your situation.

The risk is that AI may not understand:

▪️ The full context of your business
▪️ The relationship between the parties
▪️ The documents already in place
▪️ The commercial risk behind the issue
▪️ What could happen if things escalate

For small business owners, that context matters.

A response might sound confident and still miss something important. That can create problems if you rely on it for contracts, disputes, complaints, employment matters or regulatory issues.

AI ultimately should not replace getting proper advice when the issue affects your business, your money or your reputation.

Before you make a decision based on AI, make sure you understand the legal position behind it.

5 compliance mistakes that could cost your business ⚠️

Many businesses understand that compliance matters - but it’s often something that gets pushed down the priority list until a problem arises.

Here are some common mistakes we see businesses make:

❌ Assuming "we're too small for that regulation"
Regulatory obligations don't always depend on the size of your business. Small businesses can still be subject to rules that apply to their industry.

❌ Not providing regular employee training
Policies and procedures are only effective if your team understands them. A lack of awareness can create unnecessary risk.

❌ Failing to document compliance processes
Having procedures in place is important, but being able to demonstrate that you follow them can be just as crucial.

❌ Ignoring changes to legislation
Regulations evolve. Businesses that don't review updates may unknowingly fall behind their obligations.

❌ Treating compliance as a one-off exercise
Compliance isn't something you complete once and forget about - it requires ongoing review as your business changes.

A proactive approach to compliance can help businesses identify risks early, avoid disruption, and protect their reputation.

Is your business regularly reviewing its compliance processes?

⚠️ The cost of a vague agreement usually shows up later.

Most working relationships begin on good terms.

There is trust, flexibility, and a shared understanding of what needs to be done. In many cases, that feels like enough at the time.

Where things become difficult is when that understanding has never been clearly set out.

A few common patterns tend to follow:

🔹 Time is spent chasing updates or clarifying points that should have been agreed
🔹 Conversations become strained when expectations start to differ
🔹 Work is repeated or revisited because the original scope was not clear

None of this comes from bad intent. It usually comes from small gaps in communication that only become visible later on.

Clear agreements do not remove every issue, but they do give both sides a shared point of reference when something changes or needs resolving.

If something you are working on feels like it is taking more time or energy than it should, it is worth asking whether everything has actually been agreed as clearly as it needs to be.

⚠️ Business owners: have you checked you're complying with the holiday pay record-keeping requirements?

A holiday pay record-keeping requirement came into force on 6 April 2026.

Employers are now required to keep adequate records demonstrating compliance with annual leave and holiday pay obligations, with records generally needing to be retained for six years.

If your business employs staff, don't assume your existing records are enough.

Take a few minutes to check:

✅ What records are being kept
✅ Where they're stored
✅ How long they are retained for
✅ Whether they would be easy to produce if required

Good record-keeping won't prevent every dispute, but it can put your business in a much stronger position if questions arise later.
