Albany Solicitors is a professional and friendly Immigration & Asylum firm located in Cardiff and Bristol. We specialise in all aspects of Immigration, Nationality and Asylum law and act for a diverse range of clients from applications to higher court appeals. Albany Solicitors holds a contract with the Legal Aid Agency enabling us to offer advice and assistance in Asylum and certain catagories o

f Immigration law without financial charge to clients on state benefits or a low income. We also have an extensive private paying client base and are able to offer competitive rates for our work. Our non Immigration, Nationality and Asylum based services include Change of Name Deeds, Statutory Declarations and Swearings. The founding partners, Misha Giri Slough and Sara Chang Kee have over 40 years combined legal experience between them. Misha Slough graduated from Swansea University with LLB Law Hons in 1998. She completed her LLM Masters degree at Leicester University in Human Rights and Civil Liberties in 1999 and completed the Legal Practice Course at Cardiff University in 2000. Misha joined a well established Cardiff law firm in 2000 and became the head of the Immigration Department there in 2002. She was made a salaried partner in that firm in 2003 where she remained until founding Albany Solicitors with Sara Chang Kee in 2006. Misha is also one of five qualified solicitors in the UK contracted to the Legal Aid Agency to review the quality of work carried out by other solicitors in the field of immigration law. Sara Chang Kee graduated from Cardiff University with LLB Law Hons in 2002 having previously worked at a leading local law firm in a paralegal capacity throughout her degree. She completed the Legal Practice Course at Cardiff University in 2003 and returned to her previous firm. Due to her extensive experience, her application to qualify as a Solicitor was expedited and she was successful in obtaining the only qualified solicitor job that was offered in the Immigration Department of the firm that year. Sara not only had her own wide ranging case load but also supervised other, less experienced members of the fee earning staff. Sara left her previous firm to become a founding partner at Albany Solicitors in 2006. Since 2006 the firm has continued to expand to employ experienced and highly motivated legal staff with a variety of professional experience. All fee earning staff are accredited under the terms of the Solicitors Regulation Authority Asylum and Immigration Accreditation Scheme. Albany Solicitors has dedicated, strong ties to many local community groups in both Cardiff and Bristol, and also with those throughout Wales and the South West of England. Due to the popularity of the firm, to enable us to provide the best possible assistance we are only able to see clients on an appointment basis. If you wish to make an appointment to see one of our legal advisers, please either telephone or email us. *Reminder to carry a British passport or certificate of entitlement to the right of abode in your valid foreign passport”

As you are aware, the Home Office have transiting to a immigration system, we’d like to remind everyone that to enter the UK as a British citizen, you must hold, and travel with, one of the following valid documents:

• A valid British citizen passport, or
• A Certificate of Entitlement (CoE) to the Right of Abode in your valid foreign passport.

If you have been naturalised or registered as a British citizen, travelling with your naturalisation or registration certificate will not allow you to enter the UK. Without a British passport or CoE, you risk being denied boarding or facing issues at the border.

If you don’t currently have one of these documents, you need to apply for it before travelling. Your British passport or CoE in your foreign passport lets you enter the UK as many times as you need, as long as your document is still valid.

If you are a parent or guardian, please ensure that your children and dependants also have the correct documentation before travelling.

If you already hold a valid British citizen passport or CoE in your foreign passport, please ensure you carry this when travelling to the UK and remind friends and family, who are also British citizens, to do the same.

Further information or to apply then please contact our offices on 02920 472728

*Family Reunion suspended*

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says the government will temporarily suspend new refugee family reunion applications in an "overhaul" of the asylum system.

It is unclear at present what this means for those who have applications for family reunion that have already been submitted and are pending a decision. Further updates expected.

Happy Somaliland day yesterday to the many somalilanders living in our communities, and especially in Bristol and Cardiff.

Somaliland, officially the Republic of Somaliland, remains is an unrecognised country. The UK Home office are happy to recognise Somaliland as a separate entity when they wanted or to determine Somaliland as part of greater Somalia when they want 🤦‍♀️

Bristol and Cardiff share great historical connections with Somalia and Somaliland and have long standing communities over over 100 years. The Somali and Somaliland communities are an integral part of the make up of our great cities.

Here are 5 common myths surrounding immigration in the UK, along with facts to help challenge misinformation:

1. ❌ Myth: "Immigrants take jobs from British workers."
✅ Fact: Immigrants often fill labour shortages in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and hospitality. They contribute to economic growth and create demand for goods and services, which supports jobs.

2. ❌ Myth: "Immigrants drain the NHS."
✅ Fact: Many immigrants work in the NHS as doctors, nurses, and support staff. Studies show they contribute more in taxes than they receive in services over time.

3. ❌ Myth: "The UK is overwhelmed by asylum seekers."
✅ Fact: Asylum seekers make up a small percentage of total immigration, and the UK receives fewer asylum applications than many other European countries.

4. ❌ Myth: "Immigrants don't pay taxes."
✅ Fact: Most immigrants work, pay income tax, VAT, and National Insurance like everyone else. Undocumented workers are often exploited, but still contribute indirectly through consumption.

5. ❌ Myth: "Immigrants don’t integrate."
✅ Fact: Integration is a two-way process. Many immigrants learn English, work, volunteer, and contribute to their communities — often while facing systemic barriers and discrimination.

We challenge misinformation about our valuable immigrant population and in addition believe compassion should lead when it comes to anyone seeking asylum in the U.K.

*major change to British citizenship rules as of 10/02/25-implemented with immediate effect*

Please note that as of 10/2/25 the rules relating to naturalisation (applying for British citizenship have changed). Any person applying for citizenship from 10 February 2025, who “previously” entered the UK illegally (ie without valid entry clearance or electronic travel authorisation) will now normally be refused, regardless of the time that has passed since the illegal entry took place. This is an indefinite refusal.

This applies to all applicants, regardless as to whether they now hold refugee status.

The ramifications of this change to the rules are wide reaching and will affect tens of thousands of potential applicants, and their wider families.

Please seek urgent legal advice from an immigration specialist before considering applying for citizenship.
