I have been shoeing horses for 37 years.
In the last few days I've sat and thought about what keeps me going.
Here are my latest ponderings!
Every horse is different in personality and conformation and that is what makes my job interesting. I'm always thinking about how I can:
1. Assess and work with the horse in front of me.
2. Trim and apply a shoe to protect, and in some cases modifying a shoe to support the trim.
3. To enhance performance without hindering what nature has given
4. To the highest standard

So... I am chuffed to bits to find out this evening that I was awarded 'Best Shod Horse' award at Royal Cornwall Show in Local Show Hunter class today!!!
There are a few things that makes this special...
1. I was unaware that this award was attached to this class when shoeing the horse last week so it came as quite a suprise tonight.
2. It is judged on the Farriers every-day standard of work. And takes into consideration the shape and fit of the shoe to provide a supportive base for the horse to stand on and move efficiently.
3. And the best bit.... I have shod for this young lady's family for over 30 years, shoeing her Grandmother's and Mother's horses.
4. The special bit... Sharon bought her Flame from them back in 1999 ❤️

Caught the 'Sleeper' (didn't get much sleep!) up to London last night to do a presentation at an animal rehabilitation conference at the Excel exhibition centre.
Talk was on Equine CST (Eco-Somatics) and how this therapy is beneficial for horses with muscular/facial restriction and injury, and how this is integrated into my Farriery work.
This was preceded with a presentation by Caroline Barrow head of Upledger Institute UK, who talked about Human CST and how the two cross over.
It was a good day and well received by our audience.
I enjoyed it, but I'm glad it's all over!!

It's been nearly 12months since my last post so I think it's time for an update!
It's been a busy year! Had a fantastic ESE1 in July that has given me the foundation to treat horses that come my way.
I have managed to incorporate this into my regular Farriery work, with many positive results.
My main aim is to get my ESE2 in the future. This will give me the opportunity and the confidence to build up this side of the therapy that I find so rewarding.
In October last year I resat my CST1 and on the back of that I enrolled onto a Human Anatomy & Physiology Foundation course with the London College of Body Science.
With essays and a lot of time studying and revising..... Next week is the written exam!!!!
When reaching that 'mid life crisis' blokes normally go out an buy a big motor bike or a jet ski..... Not me I go out and put myself through training for Human A&P and Equine CST/ESE!!!
And if that wasn't enough I've been asked to share the stage with Caroline Barrow and speak at an animal rehabilitation conference (COPA) in London at the ExCell in June!!
Watch this space for an up date and pics... I promise

I am starting the countdown to attending the first Equine Craniosacral Therapy (Equine CST) course in mainland UK in mid July.
Equine CST is a ‘hands - on’ therapy that is very effective in releasing tension within the connective tissue of muscle groups (fascia)and their related ligaments and joints throughout the whole horse, brought about by trauma or injury, from the Cranium to the Sacrum. (That is a very simplified and brief explanation!)

Approaching Equine CST from a Farrier’s point of view will be helpful in appreciating and assessing the structure and movement of the horse in my day to day work in order to shoe effectively, enhance performance at every level and reduce injury.
This is a level 1 course, the prerequisite is completion of Human CST 1 which I did 4 years ago in Bristol which I really enjoyed and couldn’t help but relate the Human anatomy and physiology to the Equine, with plans one day to do an Equine course, but at that time they were only run in the US!

So my wait is nearly over! I am quietly excited and nervous about stepping out of the old ‘comfort zone’ but there is nothing like a bit of ‘Zone Busting’ to keep you sharp and keen!
I will keep you posted how things are going on this page and if you want more details then have a chat next time I shoe your horse.
