This week is Mental Health Awareness Week 💙

The campaign aims to raise awareness of mental health and encourage open conversations around it. We all experience good and bad mental health at different times, depending on the challenges and experiences we face day to day.

You will handle a range of section 16 applications and section 21A challenges, while undertaking a variety of day-to-day tasks including taking instructions, drafting documents, securing appropriate funding, briefing counsel, attending court and meeting with clients.

Our team have absolutely smashed their “1000 Miles in April” challenge in support of Pendleside Hospice! 👏

Together, they set out to walk, run, cycle and swim 1000 miles across the month and they went above and beyond, completing an incredible 1670 miles!

From lunchtime walks to weekend group outings (with a couple of four-legged friends joining in along the way🐾), it’s been fantastic to see everyone get involved.

We’re so proud of the commitment and team spirit shown. Thanks to their efforts, we’ve raised £215 for an amazing cause.

Ensuring our clients have a fair hearing isn’t optional - it’s a fundamental right.

In a recent case, a Mental Health Tribunal failed to achieve this for our client.

Led by our solicitor, Tom Battarbee, we challenged that decision at the Upper Tribunal, which agreed it was unfair.

The case will now be heard again, giving our client the opportunity they should have had from the start - to properly participate in the proceedings.

We will always advocate for our Mental Health Law clients to make sure their voices are heard.

We’re proud to announce Pendleside Hospice as our Charity Partner for 2026 💛

Southerns Solicitors and Pendleside Hospice share a special legacy. The hospice was founded by Muriel Jobling MBE, who trained and practised at the firm that later became Southerns Solicitors before dedicating her life to improving end-of-life care across Burnley and Pendle.

Thanks to her determination and continued community support, Pendleside Hospice now helps more than 1,700 people every year, providing compassionate care, dignity and comfort when it matters most. Though with annual running costs of £6.8 million and only 20% funded through NHS grants, fundraising is vital.

We’re proud to support this incredible cause and our fundraising has already begun. Our Easter Chocolate Raffle raised £174, we donated a further £500 this month and our team is currently taking on a “1000 Miles in April” challenge, with £165 raised so far.

Later this year, several members of our team will also take part in the Pendle Pub Walk, alongside more fundraising activities throughout 2026.

We look forward to supporting Pendleside Hospice this year and invite our clients, colleagues and community to join us in making a real difference 💜
