📅 Do your customers actually know what happens if they cancel?

A cancellation policy shouldn’t only come up once somebody wants to cancel.

Your terms should make the position clear from the outset.

Depending on the type of business and whether your customer is a consumer, there may also be legal rules affecting what you can charge or retain.

So don’t simply add:

“All payments are non-refundable.”

Your cancellation provisions need to work for your business and comply with the law.

🗣️ “We agreed it over the phone.”

That might feel perfectly straightforward… until two people remember the conversation differently.

Even where an agreement can legally exist without a formal written contract, having important terms recorded in writing can make a huge difference if there is later a disagreement.

What was being provided?

How much would it cost?

When was payment due?

What was included?

What had each party agreed to do?

Writing things down isn’t about expecting a relationship to go wrong.

It’s about making sure everyone starts on the same page.

That’s why we created the Legal Contract Store. Our templates provide a professionally drafted starting point that you can tailor to your business, without starting from a blank page.

Because getting your legal foundations in place shouldn’t feel overwhelming.

🔍 DO YOU NEED TO CARRY OUT RIGHT TO WORK CHECKS ON YOUR FREELANCERS?

It's a question we've been asked a lot recently!

With the changes to Right to Work requirements, businesses engaging subcontractors, freelancers and associates need to understand when checks may be required.

But here's the important bit...

Not every subcontractor or freelancer arrangement automatically requires a Right to Work check.

So how do you know whether the new requirements apply to your business?

We've created a practical Right to Work Checklist to help you assess your working arrangements and identify when checks may be needed.

💷 Available for just 99p!

👉 Get your checklist here: https://kkbservices.com/the-legal-store/business-guides/right-to-work-checklist/

Please note: This checklist focuses on subcontractors, freelancers and associates. It does not cover the separate Right to Work requirements for employees.

😩 “While you’re there, could you just…”

Four words that many service providers know very well.

A small extra request becomes another task.

Then another.

And suddenly you’re doing significantly more work than you originally priced for.
This is why your contract should clearly define the scope of the services and explain what happens when a client asks for additional work.

Because “I thought that was included” is much easier to deal with when the agreement already says what actually is.

📄 When did you last actually read your own contract?

Businesses change.
You add new services.
Your payment process changes.
You start using subcontractors.
You introduce deposits or payment plans.
Your cancellation policy evolves.

But often, the contract stays exactly the same.

Your legal documents should reflect how your business operates today, not how it worked two years ago.

If yours are overdue a refresh, it might be time to take another look.

Sunday reminder: your business doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s.

You can build it around the way you want to work — your hours, your services, your boundaries and the clients you want to work with.

The important bit is making sure the legal side keeps up with it.

Weekend reminder for business owners ☕

You do not need to spend your Saturday night reading legal documents.

But it is worth knowing whether the contracts you are using still reflect the way your business actually works.

Businesses change.

You add new services.
You change how you take payment.
You start using subcontractors.
You move from one-off projects to retainers.
You introduce online bookings or digital products.

And sometimes the contract gets left behind.

So if you have not looked at yours for a while, this is your gentle reminder to check that it still matches the business you are running now.

The Legal Contract Store has industry-specific templates if yours needs a refresh.

VAs and OBMs: does your contract cover associates?

You’re busy, so you bring in another VA to help with client work.

Great for growing your business, but does your client contract actually allow you to do it?

If you use associates or subcontractors, your Terms should deal with things such as:

✔️ Whether you can delegate work
✔️ Confidentiality
✔️ Data protection
✔️ Responsibility for work carried out by others
✔️ Intellectual property

Our VA & OBM Contract Templates have been designed specifically around the way virtual support businesses actually work.

No generic freelancer contract with a few words swapped out.

Running a retreat? There may be more to think about than your booking T&Cs. 🌿

A retreat can involve a lot more legally than simply selling a place at an event.

Accommodation, workshops and activities, guest speakers, photographers, external caterers, cancellations, programme changes…the list can grow quickly.

And if you are selling a retreat which combines accommodation with other services or activities, you also need to consider whether the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 apply to what you are offering.

These Regulations can impose additional obligations on organisers, so it is important not to assume that ordinary event or booking terms will be enough.

Your Terms also need to make it clear what your customer is actually buying, what is included in the price and what happens if plans change or something doesn’t go to plan.

Our B2B & B2C Retreat Terms of Sale Template gives retreat organisers a solid starting point that can be tailored to their particular retreat.

⚠️ Important: The template does not remove the need to consider whether the Package Travel Regulations apply to your particular retreat and whether you have additional legal obligations as a result.

Because the legal bit probably wasn’t the reason you decided to organise a retreat. 😉
