🎂 Your child turns 18… but did you know your rights as a parent change too?

Once your child becomes an adult, you don’t automatically have the legal authority to make decisions about their health, welfare or finances if something happens and they’re unable to make those decisions themselves.

That’s why Lasting Powers of Attorney aren’t just something to think about later in life.

From age 18, putting LPAs in place means choosing people you trust to step in and support you should you ever need them.

18 might feel young to think about an LPA - but accidents and illness don’t have an age limit.

💷 Can you spend your mum’s money if you have Power of Attorney?

Yes - but there are important rules around what you can spend it on.

When acting as an attorney, any financial decisions you make must be in your mum’s best interests. That means her money is there to support her needs, not simply for you to use as you wish.

There can be exceptions around things like gifts that she has regularly made in the past - but it’s important to understand what is and isn’t permitted.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone significant responsibility, which is why choosing the right people and understanding their role matters.
