In 1876, there were no formal legal qualifications, no central land register, no telephones, and no women in the profession at all.
When William Blackhurst opened his doors in Blackpool 150 years ago, he was stepping into a world of handwritten deeds, articled clerks, and a client base drawn almost entirely from the propertied classes. The law was recognisable in name only.
