Is PII quietly forcing the hand of law firm partners across England and Wales?

For a lot of senior partners, the plan was always to wind down on their own terms, however, unaffordable or unattainable PII cover is increasingly taking that choice away.

The SRA's data shows 532 firm closures in the 12 months to November 2025. Senior partner retirement was the single biggest driver, and most of these were perfectly healthy practices.

The problem is that when renewal falls through, everything moves fast. A 60-day cessation period kicks in, the firm can't take on new work, and a long list of regulatory obligations starts all at once.

Our Head of Regulatory (National), Wesley Thompson, comments:
"A tough market at the moment is seeing deals fall over and pushing firms into wind-down situations. These circumstances prompt mandatory reporting to the SRA. Having a specialist handle this will give you more time to concentrate on your business. We're assisting firms in navigating successor questions and to ensure a smooth and compliant closure."

If renewal is looking uncertain or retirement is on the horizon, it's worth taking advice sooner rather than later.

A suspected non-accidental injury can trigger a formal social services investigation very quickly. Knowing what to expect at each stage can make a significant difference.

Our latest article explains what happens at each stage, and what your rights are throughout the process.

Legal Aid is available for these cases, meaning you may be entitled to free legal representation.

Birmingham's Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) celebrated its 5th anniversary last week, attended by Lord Justice Jackson and Jess Phillips MP.

Over the last five years at Birmingham’s FDAC:
◽️ 191 children were supported by the court
◽️ 128 children were returned to parents or family
◽️ 51% of parents achieved abstinence
◽️ 97% had no further arrests after completing the programme

Our Regional Head of Care in Birmingham, Matthew Cannan, represented the child in the very first FDAC case heard in Birmingham and has been involved in the court ever since. In this article he shares what makes the FDAC different, why it remains a postcode lottery, and how the same problem-solving approach can be applied in cases where it isn't available.
