You can't legally sign a settlement agreement without a solicitor reviewing it first.

That's not a suggestion- it's a legal requirement. If your employer has presented you with a settlement agreement, you must get independent legal advice before you sign. It's built into the process to protect you.

A settlement agreement is a legally binding document typically used when employment is ending. Your employer offers a financial package in exchange for you agreeing to give up certain employment rights.

Before you agree to anything, you need to understand what the terms actually mean, what rights you're giving up, and whether the offer fairly reflects your situation.

We review settlement agreements regularly for clients. This can be done face to face or remotely. We will explain the details and help you make an informed decision about what is being offered.

If you have been given a settlement agreement by your employer, feel free to get in touch. We're happy to help.

Are you a company director that requires independent legal advice (ILA)?

There are times when directors need independent legal advice- separate from the company's usual solicitor. This might be when you're entering into a shareholder agreement, facing a potential conflict of interest, or being asked to give personal guarantees by a lender.

Independent legal advice ensures you understand what you're committing to, what the risks are, and whether the terms are in your best interest- not just the company's, and it protects you personally.

Many directors assume the company solicitor can advise them, but that's not always the case. If there's any conflict between your interests and the company's, you need someone acting solely for you.

We provide a quick turnaround independent legal advice service for directors across a range of situations. If you are unsure whether you need ILA, it's worth asking. Feel free to get in touch.

Who should you choose as your attorney?

Thinking about a Lasting Power of Attorney? One of the most important decisions is who you appoint. It should be someone you trust completely, someone you can communicate with, and who understands your values and will act in your best interests.

Many people choose a spouse, adult child, or close family member. But it's also worth thinking practically: are they good with finances? Do they live nearby? Are they capable making difficult decisions if needed?

You can appoint more than one attorney and decide whether they act jointly or independently. That flexibility can be really helpful, especially if your circumstances are complex.

This is something we help you think through, so the right safeguards are in place. If you're considering an LPA, we are always happy to help.

Need a document witnessed or certified?

Many official processes require documents to be certified as true copies or witnessed by a solicitor. This might be for passport applications, visa documents, statutory declarations, or certified copies of ID for financial or legal purposes.

Not all solicitors offer this service, but we do. It's a straightforward process- we confirm it's a true copy of the original, and provide the certification or witnessing you need.

It's particularly useful when you're dealing with official bodies, some overseas applications, or situations where proof of authenticity is required. Having a solicitor certify your documents adds a layer of credibility and often speeds up the process.

We're based in Bishop's Stortford and offer a quick turnaround service. We are happy to help with document witnessing and certification. Not sure what you need? Get in touch to see if we can assist.

Why you MUST get a solicitor to review a settlement agreement?

Because once you sign, it's legally binding- and you're agreeing to give up certain employment rights, including the right to bring a tribunal claim. That's a significant decision, and it's one you need to make with full understanding of what's at stake.

Your employer usually covers the cost of legal advice. That doesn't mean the solicitor works for them- your advice is independent, confidential, and focused entirely on your interests.

We help clients understand what they're being offered, whether it's reasonable given their situation, and assist with any concerns. It's about clarity and protection during what can be a stressful time.

If you have received a settlement agreement, get in touch.

What happens during probate if there's no Will?

Probate is the legal process of administering someone's estate after they pass away. Without a Will, there is initial anxiety because there are no clear directions, it is more complicated—and often more stressful for the family left behind.

The court appoints an administrator (usually a close relative) to handle everything, but they have to follow strict intestacy rules. That means that you could have someone you did not and would not choose making decisions about your estate. It can also mean delays, additional costs, and outcomes that don't align with what the person might have wanted.

When there is a Will in place, the process is quicker and clearer. The executor knows what to do, your wishes are known, and the family has fewer decisions to make during an already difficult time.

Getting a Will sorted early always makes a difference. If you've been putting it off or not sure where to begin, we're happy to help. Give us a call.

What actually happens if you don't have a Will?

Your estate gets divided according to the intestacy rules, not your wishes. The law states who gets what, and it will not always reflect what you'd want.

If you're unmarried but in a long-term relationship, your partner may get nothing. Also family members who are not first in line, friends, favourite charities etc get nothing.

If you are married but have children from a previous relationship, things can get complicated quickly.

Nothing you would have wanted will be considered if not in a valid Will.

This is something we help clients navigate every day, making sure your estate goes to the people you actually want to provide for, without leaving your family to deal with uncertainty.

If you are unsure where to start, we're happy to help. Give us a call.
