Regulation shapes legal practice. The profession should therefore help shape regulation. And that is where Birmingham Law Society’s Professional Regulation Committee has an important role.

Chaired by Cary Whitmarsh of Trowers & Hamlins, the Committee brings practitioner expertise into consultations on the rules, regulatory expectations and policy proposals that affect firms and legal professionals in the real world.

Recent BLS work has included responses concerning:
* first-tier complaints
* third-party litigation funding
* client-money requirements
* the use of AI in court documents.

It is detailed work, but its purpose is straightforward: to make sure the combined experience of the profession is part of the conversation when change is being designed.

A new Presidency. A clear vision. A stronger, more connected legal community.

As Guy Barnett begins his year as President of Birmingham Law Society - taking the reins from Matt O'Brien - he sets out an ambitious but focused approach built around four priorities:
ADVANCE.
CONNECT.
ENGAGE.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

From strengthening connections between senior leaders and junior lawyers to making membership more meaningful, Guy's message is simple:
“Do fewer things — but do them well.”

His Presidency will also champion Carter the Brave, supporting Birmingham Children's Hospital, with a Mount Kilimanjaro climb planned for January.

Above all, Guy wants to hear from YOU.

Introducing the first LegalRunner Birmingham 5K in partnership with No5 Barristers' Chambers!

LegalRunner is a nationwide community founded by Mark Evans that brings together legal professionals through running, promoting wellbeing and positive mental health. Whether you are an experienced runner or simply enjoy being active, LegalRunner provides a friendly and supportive way to meet colleagues from across the profession and build relationships beyond the workplace.

We will follow a 5K route around Birmingham City Centre, with a guided warm-up and cool down.

To ensure the run is enjoyable for all abilities, there will be a range of guided pace groups with target finish times between around 25 and 40 minutes, including a run-walk option.

Our regional contacts will be on hand throughout the route to ensure nobody is left behind.

Following the run, we will head to No5 Chambers for refreshments, and an opportunity to socialise and network.

Some committees begin with a policy. This one began with members asking to be heard.

Birmingham Law Society’s Immigration Committee was established after practitioners called for a dedicated forum for Birmingham and the surrounding region.

Today, chaired by Sabina Kauser, it brings together professionals working across immigration practice to consider developments in the law and legislative process, discuss issues affecting practitioners and engage with relevant consultations.
