Property is never just about bricks and mortar. It is about the homes, businesses, infrastructure and places in which Birmingham's future is built - and this affects all of us.

Birmingham Law Society's Property & Development Committee brings together expertise spanning commercial and residential property, construction and planning law.

Chaired by Samantha Ingram, Director/Head of Conveyancing at Davisons Law, the Committee meets regularly to exchange insight on best practice, recent case law and risk management, while also contributing the profession's perspective to relevant government consultations.

New Chair Alert!
I’m delighted to be appointed Chair of the Birmingham Law Society Family Law Committee, says Richard Port MBE – former BLS President.

Family law is more than my area of practice – it's a cause I care deeply about. Every day, we help people through some of life’s hardest moments. That responsibility continues to inspire me.

I’ve worked to champion family law beyond the courtroom—through speaking events, community work and the Let’s Talk About Family Law podcast. We have a duty to educate, engage and open up the profession.

As Chair, I want this Committee to be approachable, forward-thinking, and useful to practitioners at every stage. We’ll deliver high-quality training, create space for honest discussion, and strengthen ties with the judiciary. We spend enough time facing each other in court—let’s build something together.

A key date for your diary:
Family Law Conference – 12 Nov
Keynote: Sir Stephen Cobb, President of the Family Division
Join us for legal updates, insights across the sector and networking.

Thanks to Birmingham Law Society for the opportunity to serve as Chair. If you’ve got ideas or want to get involved, I’d love to hear from you.

Looking forward to seeing many of you soon.
Richard Port MBE
Chair, BLS Family Law Committee

Compliance overload in conveyancing?

A new article in the new edition of Bulletin from Dye & Durham sheds light on a growing concern in UK law firms: compliance processes are expanding - but are they really working?

The latest roundtable of legal and compliance professionals revealed that AML checks have become more about protecting files than understanding risk, with fee earners overloaded and clients frustrated by duplication.

The fix? Proportionality, smarter training, streamlined tech - and above all, better judgement.

Our LGBTQ+ Committee is hosting a relaxed summer social on Thursday 27th August at Missing Bar and all are welcome - whether you’re part of the community or a proud ally.

It’s a fantastic chance to meet the committee, connect with others, and hear about what they’ve been up to over relaxed drinks, sunshine (hopefully) and networking.

Sponsored by Anthony Collins, this is a free event open to all and a welcome drink will be provided (additional drinks and food are available to buy from the bar).

Book via the BLS events page (link in bio).

Behind every major organisation is a legal team keeping things running smoothly.

The Birmingham Law Society’s In-House Committee champions the work of legal professionals in business, government, and the not-for-profit sector across the West Midlands.

From legal updates and leadership panels to skills training and networking, our collaborations and events are designed to support and connect in-house lawyers at every stage of their career.

This forward-looking Committee is also there to support the BLS, to help the Society to progress initiatives which ensure the progression, diversity and inclusion of the in-house legal community and to be to the specialist advisory group for BLS in respect of the in-house legal community with the region served by the Society.

Highlights so far this year include our Planning Law Updates and Communications Skills event (sponsored by Anthony Collins) and the powerful In-House Legal Leadership: “Journey to GC” panel event(sponsored by Gleeson Recruitment Group).

More events are coming this autumn—stay tuned!
