New immigration protections have been introduced for Skilled Worker visa holders who are victims of modern slavery.

From 8 October 2026, the Immigration Rules provide greater flexibility for Skilled Workers identified as victims of modern slavery, allowing them to work for another employer without their immigration status keeping them tied to an exploitative workplace.

This is an important development because sponsored workers would ordinarily have restrictions on who they can work for, with a change of employer potentially requiring changes to their sponsorship and immigration permission.

For individuals experiencing exploitation, the relationship between employment and immigration status can make leaving a difficult situation particularly complex. The new provision is intended to reduce that dependency and provide greater protection for recognised victims.

Anyone concerned about their immigration status following problems with a sponsoring employer should seek specialist advice on their individual circumstances before taking action.

Companies House enforcement is becoming an increasingly important issue for company directors.

Recent reforms have strengthened the Registrar's powers to investigate company information and take enforcement action, including the ability to impose financial penalties for relevant Companies Act offences. Criminal prosecution also remains available for certain breaches.

The Companies Act 2006 contains a wide range of offences, from failures concerning statutory filing obligations to offences involving false or misleading information and, at the more serious end, fraudulent trading. The potential liability and available defences will depend on the particular offence and circumstances. Fraudulent trading under section 993, for example, requires a person to be knowingly party to carrying on the company's business with intent to defraud creditors or for a fraudulent purpose.

Where a director or company becomes subject to an investigation, prosecution or other enforcement action, obtaining specialist advice at an early stage can be important in understanding the allegation, the evidence and the appropriate response.

Employment Tribunal time limits have changed.

From 1 October 2026, the time limit for bringing the majority of Employment Tribunal claims increased from three months to six months. This includes important claims such as unfair dismissal and discrimination.

For employees, the additional time may provide greater opportunity to understand what has happened, seek advice and consider whether a workplace dispute can be resolved before proceedings become necessary.

However, the change should not be taken to mean that every employee automatically has six months from the date they first seek advice. The applicable deadline depends on the type of claim and the relevant event or conduct giving rise to it. Where the relevant date fell before 1 October 2026, the previous time limit may still apply.

Acas Early Conciliation also remains an important part of the process and can affect the calculation of the final Tribunal deadline. Acas confirms that employees remain responsible for notifying Acas within the applicable limitation period.

If you believe you have been unfairly dismissed, discriminated against or otherwise treated unlawfully at work, obtaining advice at an early stage can help establish your rights and, importantly, the deadline applicable to your particular claim.

From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought within an individual's estate for Inheritance Tax purposes – a significant change to the way pensions have traditionally been treated on death.
For some individuals and families, this may affect existing estate planning and the overall Inheritance Tax position. It could also make pensions a more significant consideration for personal representatives when administering an estate.

The changes do not mean that every pension will attract Inheritance Tax, or that every estate will be affected. Existing exemptions, including for qualifying transfers to a surviving spouse or civil partner, remain important.
